The lab centers on artificial intelligence and studies intelligent reasoning that uses higher-order inference such as abduction. It also conducts research on chance discovery, which finds rare or new events that may become risks or benefits in the future. In language engineering, which focuses on the sensibility-related aspects of language, the lab is developing mechanisms to (semi-)automatically generate poems, catchphrases, and the like by computer. This research is oriented toward many areas, including machine reasoning as well as art and economics.

The lab uses experimental methods to study the characteristics of human perceptual and cognitive processes and sensibility. Professor Makoto Ichikawa investigates the effects that the spatiotemporal characteristics of visual and auditory stimuli have on perceptual and cognitive processes, as well as the factors that influence the characteristics of experienced time and space. The aim is to obtain a clearer answer to the question of what time and space are for humans. Assistant Professor Junji Yanagi uses experiments to examine the characteristics of human visual function in motion perception and stereopsis.

From the standpoint of perceptual psychology, the lab studies the mechanisms of vision. In particular, it focuses on questions such as how colors are distinguished and how information from the left and right eyes is integrated. Its methods are perceptual experiments, which examine active, voluntary responses to stimuli, and pupillary response measurement, which measures the involuntary responses of the pupil caused by stimuli. Using these methods, the lab aims to clarify the mechanisms of visual processing.

The lab studies human face-to-face communication from many angles, ranging from grammar and prosody to gestures and gaze. Using video-recorded conversation data, it conducts empirical research that combines quantitative and qualitative analysis. The research is interdisciplinary, spanning linguistics, psychology, and informatics. Recently, the lab has been analyzing everyday conversation, martial arts instruction, and festival preparation.

The lab works on cognitive models that describe human cognition, as well as on the development of artificial intelligence. In particular, it investigates human higher-order cognitive information processing through behavioral experiments and compares the resulting data with simulations from computational models. In this way, the lab tests theories and hypotheses about cognitive processing. Its ideal is to create artificial intelligence and algorithms that make human-like mistakes.

The lab specializes in social psychology and is particularly interested in interpersonal relationships within groups. It is known that behavior varies in many ways depending on whether a person acts alone, in a two-person relationship, or as a member of a group. The lab examines how these differences affect whether people are willing to accept others. It also aims to clarify how people perceive themselves in different situations, and how this affects their mental health and interpersonal relationships.
Takahiro Osumi, Associate Professor

The Osumi Lab aims to clarify the mechanisms by which people's minds influence one another, through the workings of the brain and body. From the perspective of social neuroscience, the lab studies facial expression and gaze perception, empathy, attachment, sense of agency, and related topics. Using brain activity and peripheral physiological responses to changes in facial expression and gaze direction as indicators, the lab examines the mechanisms of understanding others' minds and empathy. The lab has a shielded room for measuring EEG and a booth for behavioral experiments, and interaction experiments using both booths are also possible.
