The Soft Materials Chemistry Lab studies the chemistry of soft materials such as liquid crystals, polymers, and colloidal particles. The lab designs and synthesizes columnar liquid crystals whose polarization direction changes in response to an electric field, as well as molecules that induce a large twist in liquid crystals. Learning from the coloration of peacock feathers, it has also developed structurally colored materials made by assembling melanin particles prepared from polydopamine. The lab also works on mechanisms that give rise to new functions, such as magnetic materials that exploit the properties of specific elements.

The Polymer Chemistry Lab develops materials ranging from low-molecular-weight compounds to polymers, based on the mechanisms by which unusual functions such as optical, electronic, and biological ones arise. The lab makes materials that selectively adsorb rare earth elements and other targets, materials for medical diagnostics, and materials for electronics. It also works on materials that combine rotaxanes with polymers, and on polymer materials that make use of supramolecular interactions. Building a circular system that turns waste plastic into fertilizer is another of the lab's research themes.

The Fine Organic Chemistry Lab studies synthetic methods for making molecules expected to be useful as pharmaceuticals and fragrances. Many bioactive substances found in nature have complex structures, and supplying them by chemical synthesis is still difficult in many cases. To address this, the lab develops synthetic methods that use environmentally considerate solid-state and photochemical reactions, and methods that use new organometallic catalysts. The lab also puts effort into asymmetric synthesis, which selectively makes only one of two mirror-image forms (enantiomers) of a molecule.

The Environmentally Harmonious Organic Synthesis Lab studies how to make functional molecules through organic synthesis that is in harmony with the environment. Under the motto "research consistently from synthesis to function (application)," the lab investigates both synthetic methods for new substances and the properties those substances show. It works on reactions that take advantage of elements other than heavy metals, especially iodine and sulfur, and on artificial peptides made from amino acids. From molecules with extended π-electron systems, the lab designs highly luminescent fluorescent substances and dye materials that absorb light for use.

The Molecular Structure Analysis Chemistry Lab combines organic chemistry-based molecular design and synthesis with precise structural analysis. The lab began in the 2012 academic year as a lab housed within Chiba University's Center for Analytical Instrumentation. Using small organic molecules with distinctive structures as building blocks, the lab aims to create assemblies with chirality or porosity through non-covalent bonds. The properties of the resulting assemblies are investigated through multifaceted instrumental analysis.

The Ceramics Chemistry Lab synthesizes high-value-added inorganic materials using methods with a small environmental burden. Drawing on its own chemical methods, the lab pursues the precise fabrication of high-quality inorganic materials, centered on fine particles. It makes inorganic nanoparticles, thin films, porous materials, and composite materials from solution and evaluates their properties. It also takes on the challenge of realizing manufacturing that is gentle on the global environment, that is, a lower environmental burden.

The Extreme Environment Materials Chemistry Lab studies materials chemistry related to the environment and energy. The lab synthesizes inorganic materials and investigates their properties, and it also uses computational chemistry and nuclear magnetic resonance to reveal the atomic and electronic structure inside materials. It is a good fit for students who want to work on both experiments and computation. Together with companies and research institutions in Japan and abroad, the lab works on socially important issues such as battery materials, radioactive waste disposal, and carbon dioxide fixation.

The Analytical Chemistry Lab develops analytical chemistry methods for investigating substances thoroughly. The lab believes that advancing analytical chemistry means making visible what could not be seen before. Focusing on interfaces in solutions, cell membranes, and atomic vacancies, the lab works on methods for detecting atoms and molecules. Its two main pillars are laser spectroscopy and analysis using positrons, the antiparticles of electrons.

The Environmental Management Engineering Lab develops technologies that recover precious metals and rare metals from end-of-life products, using innovative hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. The lab's concept is the "synergy between technology development and assessment." The lab believes that mastering life cycle assessment means gaining the big-picture perspective needed to see where intervening will be most effective. Students work on both building elemental technologies through hands-on experiments and evaluating those technologies.

The Catalytic Chemistry Lab studies catalysts, which are essential to processes that transform materials. The lab approaches this from several angles: creating new catalysts, investigating their structures, and developing new reaction systems. Its core is design at the nanoscale and the accompanying structural analysis at the nanoscale. The lab studies high-performance catalysts oriented toward green chemistry, which aims at manufacturing with a small environmental burden.
