The Agricultural Resource Economics Lab studies agricultural research and development and the spread of new technologies from the perspective of economics. As the world's population continues to grow, there is an urgent need to increase food production through plant breeding and to respond to climate change. At the same time, countries and multinational corporations assert sovereignty and intellectual property rights over varieties and genetic resources, which creates the problem of obstructing their free exchange. Aiming at sustainable agricultural production, the lab considers the agricultural technologies that will be needed and the research and development systems and policies that can bring them about.

The Agricultural and Environmental Policy Lab studies the effects of policies on agriculture and the environment from the standpoint of economics. Taking environmental issues into account, the lab empirically examines the content and effects of the various agricultural protection policies adopted by both developed countries in Europe and North America and developing countries. It works on evaluating the multifunctionality of agriculture and rural areas, and on the effects of agricultural trade on the environment. The lab is said to trace its origins to Inazo Nitobe and others at Sapporo Agricultural College, and it took its current name after going through the names Agricultural Policy and Comparative Agricultural Policy.

The Farm Management Lab studies the directions and underlying logic of growth in diverse farm businesses in Japan and abroad. In recent years, the lab has focused on generational change in farm businesses, examining cases where no relative can take over and the fact that handovers become harder as farms grow larger. Alongside analysis based on the literature and statistics, the lab places importance on empirical research through fieldwork in rural areas in Japan and abroad. At the weekly farm management study meeting, members present their research to one another, and undergraduates also join the rural field surveys.

The Development Economics Lab studies the relationship between economic growth and agriculture, with today's economic development in developing countries in mind. Using economics, the lab analyzes how new agricultural technologies are transferred and diffused, and how this leads to agricultural development. The lab treats fieldwork in developing countries as essential to empirical research. Faculty members also work on analyzing choice behavior using stated preference methods, and on the economic analysis of nutrition problems in developing countries.

The Cooperative Studies Lab studies cooperatives such as agricultural cooperatives and consumer cooperatives. Established in 1958, it is the only lab in Japan where students can specialize in the study of cooperatives. Cooperatives are a third type of enterprise alongside for-profit and public enterprises: economic organizations through which small producers and consumers join forces to sustain themselves in the market. Every year, the lab conducts field surveys in Hokkaido and East Asia.

The Food and Agricultural Market Studies Lab studies the structure of markets and distribution for agricultural products and food. Established in 1964 as the Chair of Agricultural Market Theory, the lab has examined the structure of the markets surrounding agriculture, including agricultural product markets and agricultural input markets. The lab studies topics such as the restructuring of distribution centered on supermarkets and convenience stores, and local production for local consumption in school lunches. The lab holds a lab seminar for undergraduate students and a weekly research meeting (the Market Symposium), and the lab seminar also includes rural field survey training.

The Regional Partnership Economics Lab studies rural revitalization from the standpoint of socioeconomics. The lab investigates networks for new rural revitalization, nonprofit organizations such as cooperatives, and the impact that new entrants and farm successors have on local communities. The lab was established for research and education in collaboration with local communities, and it conducts training and research in municipalities in Hokkaido with which the Research Faculty of Agriculture has partnership agreements. The lab also runs the farm practicum for "Foundations of Food Safety and Security," in cooperation with Rakuno Gakuen University and Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, as well as the Hokudai Marché.
