The Observational Astronomy Lab studies, through radio observations, where and how stars form within galaxies. It investigates the distribution, mass, motion, and properties of the cold interstellar gas that forms the raw material for stars, using imaging observations of radio spectra and the resulting data. The lab also studies galaxy morphology using archival data from infrared satellites, and builds radio observing instruments.

The Quantum Condensed Matter Physics Lab works both on creating new materials and on discovering properties that are not yet known. In experiments, the lab develops quantum materials that show superconductivity or magnetism. It makes samples by high-pressure synthesis and vacuum deposition, examines them with diffraction experiments and electron microscopy, and measures how electricity flows through them and their magnetization. In theory, the lab uses field theory to calculate how electrons flow in spintronic devices and topological insulators. The lab is located in the Research Institute for Electronic Science, and students from the Department of Physics carry out their graduation research here.

The Fundamental Medical Physics Lab systematically measures how readily the nuclear reactions occur that produce radioisotopes (RIs) used in radiation therapy and nuclear medicine examinations. RIs decay over time, and when they do, they emit alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. This property is used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. To produce the required amount of RI each time, the reaction cross section, which indicates how much RI is produced in a nuclear reaction, is essential basic data. The research is carried out as international collaboration with researchers at institutions such as RIKEN and the Institute for Nuclear Research in Hungary.
