Associate Professor Akita's lab studies ways to protect seaweed beds, which are dense communities of seaweed. Seaweed beds are the foundation that supports coastal fisheries, and they also play a role in fixing carbon dissolved in seawater. Seaweed beds have declined greatly because of recent environmental changes, so the lab studies the life cycles, physiology, and ecology of kelps and Sargassum species to consider conservation methods. The lab also conducts a survey of the seaweed species growing at Cape Kattoshi in Hakodate.

Usujiri Fisheries Station is a facility of the Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere, which conducts education and research on the ecology, resources, and diversity of aquatic organisms. Located on the Pacific coast of the Minamikayabe area of Hakodate, the station sees marine environments that differ by season under the influence of warm and cold currents, and is home to rich marine life. The faculty members study the ecology of fishes that migrate between the sea and rivers, and the relationship between fishes and parasites. The lab is located at the station in Usujiri-cho, Hakodate, not on the Hakodate Campus.
