The Media Creation Lab studies multimodal signal processing and machine learning that handle different kinds of data, such as images, text, and biological information, together. Centered on information science, the lab pursues interdisciplinary research in collaboration with researchers in other fields. It applies AI in a wide range of areas, including infrastructure inspection, sports, the analysis of gaze and brain activity, and emotion recognition. The lab also researches recommender systems, which select and present items that match a user's preferences, in multiple domains such as music, finance, and fashion.

The Information and Communication Networks Lab studies technologies for processing multimedia information such as audio and video in real time and transmitting it wirelessly. From both the hardware and software sides, the lab builds communication systems and networks that are fast and consume little power. It works on MIMO transmission methods, which send and receive simultaneously through multiple antennas, and on speech recognition that can pick out speech even amid noise. To run processing without delay, the lab is also implementing its methods on FPGAs, which are rewritable integrated circuits.

The Information and Communication Photonics Lab studies technologies that expand the amount of data communication can carry, using optical fibers and optical circuits. As the spread of the internet and AI keeps increasing data traffic, mechanisms that carry more signals through a single optical fiber are needed. The lab works on mode-division multiplexing, which superimposes signals by using differences in how light propagates, and on the design of optical fibers with multiple cores. For on-chip optical circuits used in coherent optical communication, the lab conducts prototyping and experimental evaluation in addition to theoretical design.

The Intelligent Information and Communications Lab studies new communication methods, centered on wireless signal processing. Around the world, research and development on 6G is under way, aiming for practical use around 2030. In 6G, wireless networks that embed AI into the network and integrate communication, sensing, and computing are expected. Using signal processing and machine learning, the lab aims to create communication methods that deliver "the necessary information, to the necessary recipient, in the optimal form."

The Wireless Information and Communications Lab studies radio waves in order to support people's daily lives and protect their safety. The lab is developing methods to investigate and evaluate the safety of implantable medical devices, such as pacemakers, when they are exposed to radio waves. It also works on designing antennas that operate over a wide frequency range to enable high-capacity, ultra-high-speed communication. In addition, the lab studies how to accurately estimate how radio waves propagate, using large-scale supercomputer simulations.

The System Control Theory Lab studies how to use mathematics to build mechanisms that make things move as intended. To solve various problems in controlling and managing a wide range of targets, from man-made objects to natural phenomena, the lab studies the foundations of control theory. It focuses in particular on nonlinear control theory and on the control of hybrid systems that include logical information processing. Applications are wide-ranging: four-wheeled robots, manipulators, automobile engines, drones, power systems, and gene networks.

The Digital Geometry Processing Engineering Lab studies how to represent shapes obtained by 3D measurement of everyday objects accurately inside a computer and make them usable. The lab builds software that converts and processes large-scale 3D data from laser scanning and CT to suit purposes such as design, manufacturing, maintenance, and diagnosis. Its subjects range widely: industrial products such as automobiles and machine parts, large structures such as buildings and bridges, urban areas and city environments, and the human body. Research combines foundations in linear algebra, statistics, optimization, and discrete geometry with implementation through data structures and programming.

The Human-Centric Engineering Lab studies mechanisms that assist human physical and sensory functions. Combining robotics, measurement engineering, and ergonomics, the lab builds human-centered systems. It studies assist suits that reduce physical strain and mobile robots that cooperate with people. It also works on measuring human behavior and combining it with AI image recognition to read posture and movement.

The System Environment Informatics Lab studies how to connect the real world with the world inside computers, using three keys: systems, environments, and information. It works on cyber fields, which are virtual worlds built inside computers that are identical to real-world settings such as factories, social infrastructure, and disaster sites. It also studies product model data, which describes as data all the information needed from product design through production, inspection, maintenance, and disposal. Rather than staying within the world of information, the lab works with real systems and real fields to explore new ways of shaping society and industry through information science.

The Electrical Energy Conversion Lab develops and studies equipment for the generation, conversion, and application of electrical energy. The lab designs, analyzes, and develops equipment that makes use of superconductivity, in which electrical resistance drops to zero, and works on speeding up large-scale numerical electromagnetic field analysis of electrical equipment. Effective energy equipment is needed not only to solve environmental problems through CO2 reduction, but also in medicine and pharmaceuticals. Research proceeds through both experiments and simulation, and in recent years the lab has also worked on AI-based equipment design and stable operation.
