The Architectural Planning Lab studies the planning and design of architecture and cities. Aiming to realize human-scale living environments, the lab pursues both research based on theory and surveys and efforts to apply the results to real planning projects. Research themes include how planning is carried out, living environments for minorities, planning in an age of population decline, the relationship between environments and human behavior, and housing and living environments in Hokkaido. The lab also takes part in planning for local governments, such as the basic design of the Kamishihoro Town Office building and support for drawing up the basic plan for a cultural hall in Asahikawa City.

The Architectural Design Lab (nicknamed "Chair 11") studies practical methods of architectural design while working on real architectural projects. Drawing on a wide range of cases, the lab identifies design methods that respond to complex conditions in which problems specific to a region are intertwined with challenges shared by society, and applies them to concrete projects. The lab's design work is not limited to architecture and covers everything from graphics, furniture, art, and interiors to landscape. In the wood construction lab seminar, students also visit forestry areas and timber factories, and student theses deal with how wood is used and with the expression of contemporary architecture.

The Building Structural Engineering Lab studies building structures, seismic design, steel structures, and earthquake engineering. Targeting braced frames, which are steel frames with diagonal braces, and moment-resisting frames built from columns and beams, the lab conducts loading tests on large specimens and numerical analysis. Its research themes also include steel structures that use structural adhesives and the reuse of steel members after their original use. International students are also part of the lab, which carries out international joint research and joint research with companies.

The Building Structural Performance Lab conducts research in building structures, performance-based design, and seismic isolation. Professor Hama specializes in concrete engineering and building materials and construction. His listed areas of expertise also include concrete durability, cold-weather concreting (placing concrete in cold seasons), and building maintenance, repair, and strengthening. Assistant Professor Ishii studies seismic isolation structures, which make earthquake shaking less likely to be transmitted to a building.

The Urban Disaster Prevention Lab studies earthquake engineering and urban disaster prevention. Its research ranges from strong-motion seismology, which examines how the ground shakes during an earthquake, to human casualties caused by earthquakes and risk assessment. The lab also works on disaster prevention using AI, ICT, and IoT, monitoring for disaster prevention, and the application of deep learning to disaster prevention.

The Structural Control Lab studies structures that protect buildings from shaking caused by earthquakes and other forces. It works in three areas: seismic isolation, which makes shaking harder to transmit to a building; vibration control, which absorbs shaking with devices; and seismic resistance, which strengthens the building itself. Using device experiments and analyses that replace a building with a model to reproduce its shaking, the lab investigates the seismic performance of buildings.

The Water Quality Conversion Engineering Lab studies technologies that use the activity of microorganisms to clean water. The lab works on biotechnologies that degrade and remove environmental pollutants, as well as technologies that extract electrical energy directly from wastewater. It also studies microbe-catalyzed manufacturing (semi-artificial photosynthesis) and the behavior of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and biofilms.

The Water Environment Conservation Engineering Lab studies how substances and microorganisms move through natural environments such as rivers and soil. It also works on improving sewage facilities and treatment, and on developing sensors for examining microorganisms in water. Its research fields are the analysis of water quality and ecological environments, water treatment engineering, and analytical chemistry.

The Environmental Ergonomics Lab studies how to create environments where people can live safely, healthily, and comfortably, from a human-centered perspective. Focusing on homes, workplaces, cities, and extreme environments where temperature, humidity, light, and other factors interact, the lab develops evaluation methods, technologies for controlling the environment, and design guidelines. While valuing individual differences among people, the lab aims to achieve both energy savings and well-being.

The Environmental Systems Engineering Lab studies building environmental systems engineering, including heat supply, heating and cooling, air conditioning, and indoor environments, with the aim of "creating healthy and sustainable living environments." Recently, the lab has expanded into the planning, design, and impact assessment of facilities, buildings, and houses that use energy-saving technologies and renewable energy utilization technologies it has developed itself. The lab places importance on handling everything itself: developing materials and devices, developing equipment and systems that use them, and then planning, design, and commissioning in real buildings.
