The System Environment Informatics Lab studies how to connect the real world with the world inside computers, using three keys: systems, environments, and information. It works on cyber fields, which are virtual worlds built inside computers that are identical to real-world settings such as factories, social infrastructure, and disaster sites. It also studies product model data, which describes as data all the information needed from product design through production, inspection, maintenance, and disposal. Rather than staying within the world of information, the lab works with real systems and real fields to explore new ways of shaping society and industry through information science.

The Electrical Energy Conversion Lab develops and studies equipment for the generation, conversion, and application of electrical energy. The lab designs, analyzes, and develops equipment that makes use of superconductivity, in which electrical resistance drops to zero, and works on speeding up large-scale numerical electromagnetic field analysis of electrical equipment. Effective energy equipment is needed not only to solve environmental problems through CO2 reduction, but also in medicine and pharmaceuticals. Research proceeds through both experiments and simulation, and in recent years the lab has also worked on AI-based equipment design and stable operation.

The Power Systems Lab studies technologies for generating and delivering electrical energy effectively, economically, and stably. It approaches power systems from many angles, including software, hardware, and systems perspectives. In recent years, the lab has been developing technologies for making use of renewable energy generation such as solar and wind power. Its research themes range widely, from hydrogen energy and microgrids to power trading between consumers.

The Electromagnetic Engineering Lab studies power conversion and control technologies that are widely applied at every stage of the generation, transmission, and use of electrical energy. Power electronics is a technology that changes voltage, current, and frequency into the form needed, based on the switching operation of power semiconductor devices. It can not only convert but also control power at high speed and with high precision, and is regarded as a key technology for energy saving. Its applications keep expanding, from electric vehicles, electric aircraft, electric railways, and mega solar plants to power systems.

The Intelligent Robot Systems Lab researches how robot technology can build a safer and more secure society. It works on humanoid robots that operate in environments humans cannot approach, and on surgical simulators that let surgeons practice through trial and error before difficult operations. Its research themes also include robotics that pursues high speed, and image processing for autonomous driving and agricultural robots. The lab has facilities that include humanoid robots with the same shape, size, and weight as a human, high-speed robot hands, and an optical motion capture system.
