The Advanced Materials Chemistry Lab conducts research on advanced materials chemistry, built on photochemistry and coordination chemistry. Rare earth complexes, in which organic ligands are attached to rare earth ions, allow their coordination structures and optical functions to be tuned freely through organic synthesis. Taking advantage of this feature, the lab develops strongly luminescent materials and materials for sensing that uses light to measure things. Through the development of luminescent substances, the elucidation of optical functions, and the analysis of the surfaces of functional materials, the lab aims to contribute to modern society.

The Interfacial Electrochemistry Lab conducts research based on electrochemistry to solve problems of the environment, energy, and resources. Using anodization, an electrochemical technique, the lab creates fine structures on metal surfaces and produces surfaces that repel water and oil stains. In the field of batteries, the lab develops solid ceramic materials that conduct protons and oxygen efficiently, and works on building cells for high-efficiency fuel cells. The lab also designs nanomaterials such as nanosheets and nanoparticles, and is advancing research on producing hydrogen by water electrolysis.

The Structural Inorganic Chemistry Lab conducts research that creates inorganic materials not yet known and clarifies their structures and properties. By combining various elements of the periodic table, the lab searches for new compounds containing anions such as nitride, sulfide, and chloride. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and in situ observation, the lab follows exactly what happens during heating and during reactions. The lab also incorporates computational science and machine learning, aiming to find the intended materials efficiently.

The Solid-State Reaction Chemistry Lab develops methods for creating materials by controlling nanostructures, and explores the functions of the materials it produces. The materials it works with range widely from inorganic to organic, including layered transition metal chalcogenides, organic semiconductors, and carbon solids with nanostructures. Using equipment the lab builds itself, it grows thin films and single crystals, and investigates their properties through electron spectroscopy and transport measurements. Beyond experiments, it also uses computational chemistry to understand experimental results at the atomic level and to predict new properties.

The Inorganic Synthesis Chemistry Lab researches how to create highly functional ceramics that can help solve environmental and energy problems. Using liquid phases such as precursor solutions and melts for synthesis, it produces inorganic materials in various forms, including fine particles, thin films, composites, and glass. It works on developing materials for all-solid-state lithium secondary batteries and electrocatalysts that reduce carbon dioxide and oxygen. Its goal is to create synthesis processes that can be carried out anywhere in the world without special equipment.

The Electromagnetic and Applied Processing Lab studies the processes of making materials themselves. Its targets range from steelmaking processes, with production volumes in the millions of tons, to microscale processes that create new materials. Success depends on how precisely momentum, heat, and mass transfer can be controlled. Using new tools such as electromagnetic fields and ultrasound, the lab studies how to control the distribution of components within alloys and the orientation of crystals in ceramics.

The Materials Surface Chemistry Lab uses chemical processes to control the surfaces of metallic materials and create materials with unprecedented properties. The lab arranges nanoscale pores in regular patterns by anodizing aluminum, and creates surfaces that strongly repel water or let water spread across them instantly. It also develops corrosion-resistant magnesium materials and water-droplet generators that produce electricity from water drops. The lab places importance on changing surfaces through simple chemical processes, without expensive equipment or complicated methods.

The Environmental Materials Lab studies environmentally friendly materials from many angles, with electrochemistry at the core. Its main themes are corrosion and corrosion protection of metallic materials used in bridges and buildings, plating of aluminum alloys, and battery regeneration technology. The lab also works on research related to hydrogen energy, such as water electrolysis, which splits water to produce hydrogen, and fuel cells. Using atomic force microscopy and laser light, the lab observes reactions occurring at the nanoscale in situ.

The Strength System Design Lab studies new metallic materials (alloys) that contribute to energy savings. The lab develops heat-resistant alloys that can be used at temperatures above 1500°C, and alloys that are strong yet light, with a density less than one-third that of iron. Through both experiments, including computation, and theory, the lab investigates the relationship between a material's properties and its internal microstructure, and between the microstructure and the alloy composition. The lab aims to establish methods for designing microstructure and composition by tuning properties at each level of the hierarchy, from the nanoscale to the macroscale.

The Microstructure Control Lab aims to create materials with excellent properties by controlling the nano- and microscale microstructures that make up metallic materials. To bring out the properties of a metal, the microstructure must be shaped as intended during processes such as solidification, precipitation, and grain growth. The lab's main approach is computational materials science, combined with theory, experiments, and data science. By advancing the science of microstructure, the lab works toward developing new high-quality, high-performance materials.
