The Volcanic Eruption Prediction Lab conducts multi-parameter observations of seismicity, ground deformation, video imagery, volcanic ash, and gas at volcanoes in southern Kyushu, including Sakurajima. The lab conducts research on long-term assessment of volcanic activity, quantification of eruptions, short-term forecasting immediately before eruptions, and the prediction and real-time characterization of volcanic ash dispersal and deposition.

The Crustal Fluid Lab focuses on water in the crust and uses geophysical methods such as geoelectromagnetism and seismology to clarify the distribution of fluids from the subducting plate to the shallow crust. Building on an understanding of the settings where volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur, the lab studies the relationship between the two and evaluates the potential for volcanic eruptions.

The Large-Scale Eruption Lab analyzes observational data on earthquakes and ground deformation to gather scientific knowledge about giant caldera eruptions, such as the movement of magma at depth and the processes by which it migrates and is supplied to shallow levels. Based on this, the lab conducts research on long-term forecasting of the occurrence of large-scale eruptions.
