The lab studies slope disasters, which have become increasingly compound and severe in recent years, and conducts research on "Misaigaku" (pre-disaster science), a new concept originating in Japan that contributes to disaster prediction and better disaster-prevention literacy. The lab develops methods for evaluating slope information and for putting it to practical use in society by disseminating pre-disaster information.

The lab investigates the actual state of landslide phenomena, and conducts research to clarify their mechanisms and reduce the damage they cause. Recently, the lab has expanded its research into urban areas, studying earthquake-induced landslides on embankment slopes in residential land, and compiling histories of landslide disasters based on archaeological and historical records.

Based at the Tokushima Landslide Observatory in the central part of the Shikoku Mountains, the lab clarifies the actual state of landslides through surveys and monitoring, and develops a variety of measurement technologies. In recent years, the lab has also been conducting research on the large-scale slope disasters expected in the next Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake.
