The Earth Measurement Lab conducts large-scale analysis of seismic motion and crustal deformation data, develops analytical methods, and launches new observations, in order to clarify the temporal and spatial characteristics of crustal activity. Through this work, the lab aims to elucidate the processes by which earthquakes occur and the settings where they occur, and to contribute to predicting seismic hazard.

The Fault Physics Lab builds physical models and analyzes their behavior in order to understand and make use of the various phenomena that accompany fault motion. The lab studies the mechanics of rock fracture and friction using theory, numerical simulation, observation, and experiments.

The Space Geodesy Lab uses space geodetic data such as GNSS to model plate motion and fields of crustal deformation associated with earthquakes, slow slip, and similar phenomena. Based on observational data such as crustal deformation and seismic activity, the lab also works to improve long-term earthquake forecasting.

The Offshore Earthquake Lab investigates seismicity and subsurface structure through offshore observations of earthquakes and crustal deformation, and studies the source characteristics of earthquakes ranging from slow earthquakes to great earthquakes. The lab aims to reduce disasters caused by megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis.

Shiro Ohmi, Professor

The Earthquake Information Lab builds and operates systems that collect, store, and distribute observation data on crustal activity, such as earthquakes and crustal deformation. Alongside considering a sustainable observation system, the lab also conducts research on information dissemination that helps with disaster prevention and mitigation.

The Inland Earthquake Lab aims to reduce damage from inland earthquakes by clarifying the still poorly understood processes by which they occur and developing methods to forecast them. It is known that seismic activity becomes more active in southwestern Japan before a giant earthquake in the Nankai Trough.
