A lab that uses observations and predictions to understand extreme weather.

Building on meteorology, the Disaster Climate Lab aims to clarify how extreme weather and abnormal weather conditions arise and how predictable they are, as well as climate change and its mechanisms, in relation to changes in atmospheric composition and variability in atmospheric and oceanic circulation. The lab carries out its research through numerical experiments with general circulation models and regional weather models, and through analysis of long-term meteorological and oceanic observation data and operational ensemble numerical weather prediction data. The lab is a cooperating research group of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences in the Graduate School of Science, and belongs to the Atmospheric Science division.
