The Earthquake Generation Mechanism Lab studies the physics of earthquake occurrence, source modeling, and real-time earthquake information for use in earthquake disaster prevention. The lab also uses cutting-edge technologies such as fiber-optic sensing, together with seismic waveform data, to detect and investigate various natural hazard phenomena.

The Strong Ground Motion Lab studies the prediction of the strong shaking (strong ground motion) caused by large earthquakes. Based on earthquake source physics and seismic wave theory, the lab conducts basic research on the generation, propagation, and amplification of strong ground motion from the source to the site, and develops broadband strong ground motion prediction methods. The lab aims to contribute to building a society resilient to disasters.
