The Biomaterials Design Lab studies the appearance and comfort of wood, as well as its properties such as strength. Wood is a rare material: besides regulating humidity and resisting heat transfer, it gives people who live with it a sense of comfort through its warm color and feel. The lab captures wood grain, color, and gloss in numbers, and investigates how these affect people's impressions and bodily reactions. Undergraduate students join the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Forest Science, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The Forest Products Processing Lab studies wood processing and sensing, including non-destructive testing, to find ways to use wood effectively. Using harvested wood for a long time also helps keep carbon stored in cities and homes. Undergraduate students join the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Forest Science, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The Biofiber Science Lab investigates the solid-state structures, physical properties, and distinctive phenomena of various polysaccharides, centered on cellulose. Based on fundamental knowledge of structure and properties, the lab also works on developing highly functional materials. Undergraduate students join the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Forest Science, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The Tree Cell Biology Lab clarifies the structure of the cell wall, which underlies a tree's life activity, and the process by which it is formed. Trees live for hundreds to thousands of years, and their trunks become wood that supports daily life and culture for a long time as buildings and materials. Using a variety of advanced visualization and analysis methods, the lab also investigates the characteristics of wood as a material in depth, considering why people have used wood. Undergraduate students join the lab in their fourth year (graduate school: Division of Forest Science, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The Composite Materials Chemistry Lab works on turning biomass-derived materials, including wood and its components, polysaccharides, and natural rubber, into the basis of new functional materials. The lab pursues precise polymer synthesis, fundamental research on the properties of molecules and materials, and applied research that will be useful in the future. Assigned students learn the fundamentals of organic chemistry and polymer chemistry, and experience the whole process from experiments to presentations and writing papers. Undergraduates join the lab in their fourth year (the graduate program is the Division of Forest Science, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The Forest Biochemistry Lab focuses on white-rot fungi (mushrooms) and uses biochemistry and molecular biology to clarify how matter cycles in forests. The lab applies the knowledge gained to develop new ways of using forests in harmony with natural ecosystems. Its goal is to create a "green civilization" that is compatible with protecting the natural environment and leads to a decarbonized society. Undergraduates join the lab in their fourth year (the graduate program is the Division of Forest Science, Graduate School of Agriculture).

The Energy Ecosystem Lab conducts research on efficiently producing energy and chemicals from biomass. The amount of biomass produced on land each year is 4 to 5 times the world's primary energy demand. The lab aims to realize a circular society based on biomass in place of fossil resources. Undergraduate students join the lab in their fourth year in the Department of Forest Science (graduate students belong to the Department of Socio-Environmental Energy Science, Graduate School of Energy Science).
