THIES Holger, Associate Professor
0 student voices
From the standpoint of the theory of computation and mathematical logic, the Thies Lab investigates the difficulty (complexity) of numerical computation and of problems in continuous mathematics. It studies how far concrete problems such as differential equations, dynamical systems, and computational geometry can be computed, and how much effort they require. Undergraduates are assigned to the Division of Mathematical and Information Sciences and carry out graduation research there (for graduate students, this is the Division of Mathematical and Information Sciences in the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
Masayuki Hayashi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Hayashi Lab studies the mathematical analysis of partial differential equations, in particular nonlinear partial differential equations known as "dispersive" equations. The lab works to clarify the mathematical structures inherent in equations that arise as models of physical phenomena. Undergraduates are assigned to the Mathematical and Information Sciences Division and carry out their graduation research there (the graduate-level counterpart is the Mathematical and Information Sciences Division of the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
Yoshihiro Maruyama, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Maruyama Lab studies the theory of categorical duality, as well as applied category theory and applied topology. The lab also works on applying topology, geometry, and category theory to deep learning, and on quantum physics and quantum computation through category theory. Undergraduates are assigned to the Mathematical and Information Sciences Division and carry out their graduation research there (the graduate-level counterpart is the Mathematical and Information Sciences Division of the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
Toshiya Kinoshita, Professor
0 student voices
The Kinoshita Lab uses laser cooling and atom trapping techniques to study a new style of condensed matter physics with ultracold atomic gases. The principles of quantum statistics that underlie the properties of matter can be observed directly in weakly interacting atomic gases. Undergraduates are assigned to the Materials Science Division and carry out their graduation research there (the graduate-level counterpart is the Materials Science Division of the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
Noriaki Takagi, Professor
0 student voices
The Takagi Lab uses scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study nanoscience on solid surfaces. A solid surface is a special place where the periodicity of the crystal is broken. The arrangement of atoms and the electronic states there differ greatly from those in the interior, and a surface can also serve as a place to create new materials that do not exist in nature. The lab combines experiments under ultra-high vacuum and at extremely low temperatures with collaboration with researchers in first-principles calculations and many-body theory of condensed matter. Undergraduates are assigned to the Materials Science Division to carry out their graduation research (in the graduate school, this is the Materials Science Division of the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
Naoki Fujiwara, Professor
0 student voices
The Fujiwara Lab studies the magnetic properties of superconductors from a microscopic perspective, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) under high pressure. The lab works both on developing equipment for measurements under pressure and on studying materials such as iron-based high-temperature superconductors. Undergraduates are assigned to the Materials Science Division to carry out their graduation research (in the graduate school, this is the Materials Science Division of the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
Takao Morinari, Professor
0 student voices
The Morinari Condensed Matter Theory Lab studies the diverse phenomena shown by materials using theoretical methods. Using field theory and numerical calculations, the lab studies high-temperature superconductivity, Dirac electrons in solids, and black hole analogues in quantum fluids. Undergraduates are assigned to the Materials Science Division to carry out their graduation research (in the graduate school, this is the Materials Science Division of the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
Setsuhisa Tanabe, Professor
0 student voices
The Tanabe Lab aims to develop new photofunctional materials that will support future photonics technologies. The lab designs and synthesizes phosphors for LED lighting, wavelength-conversion materials for solar power generation, and glass for optical fiber amplifiers, and studies their optical properties. Undergraduate students are assigned to the Materials Science Course to carry out their graduation research (in graduate school, the Materials Science Course of the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
Hirohito Tsue, Professor
0 student voices
The Tsue Lab works on organic materials chemistry in harmony with the environment, building on structural organic chemistry, organic crystal chemistry, and synthetic organic chemistry. The lab creates organic molecular crystals that selectively take up specific molecules and investigates how they work. Taking advantage of the lightness of crystals made only of light elements, the lab studies greenhouse gases and clean-energy gases. Undergraduate students are assigned to the Materials Science Course to carry out their graduation research (in graduate school, the Materials Science Course of the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
Kenichi Fujita, Professor
0 student voices
Building on organic synthetic chemistry and organometallic chemistry, the Fujita Lab designs and develops molecular transformation reactions that are in harmony with the environment. By combining metals and organic molecules, the lab discovers new reactions and catalytic functions, and aims to produce organic molecules with a wide range of functions in high selectivity. Each graduate student has their own research topic and acquires skills such as the synthesis of complexes, catalytic reactions, and single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. Undergraduates are assigned to the Materials Science Division and carry out their graduation research there (at the graduate level, the Materials Science Division of the Department of Human and Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies).
