The Living Sphere Timber Structure Science Lab studies how to build safe, rational buildings using wood and wood-based materials. It works on joint methods that connect structural members, the development of new construction methods, and ways to evaluate the performance of existing buildings. When wood is used in buildings, the CO2 that trees took in through photosynthesis stays stored in the city for the decades the building is in use. From strength tests of structural members to full-scale shake-table tests and numerical analysis, the lab develops new joint methods and structures. In the Department of Forest Science, Graduate School of Agriculture, the lab is listed under the name 'Timber Structure Science'.

The Functional Biomaterials Lab scientifically elucidates the structure and function of biomass produced by living organisms, and conducts research on using it wisely by integrating organic chemistry, polymer science, materials science, and processing technology. The lab aims to fully draw out the potential of biomass, which has distinctive properties and functions that synthetic polymers cannot reproduce.

The Circular Materials Creation Lab creates new wood-based materials with a low environmental impact by making use of the structure and functions of woody biomass, and also conducts research to deeply understand and evaluate the characteristics of those materials. The lab studies not only wood but also unused biomass such as herbaceous plants and agricultural waste.

The Habitat Environmental Symbiosis Lab aims to make wood resources last longer. It studies how to improve the durability of wood, wood-based materials, and timber houses; the physiology and ecology of wood-decay fungi and termites and integrated control of the damage they cause; technologies that improve the penetration of preservatives into wood; and technologies for deterioration diagnosis and maintenance. The lab also takes on environmental remediation and bioenergy development that use the functions of organisms that degrade wood, as well as nanostructure analysis of wood carbon, which is attracting attention for its high functionality, and the development of new functions for it.
