Tomoyuki Miyaji, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Miyaji Lab studies, through mathematical models, phenomena in nature and society in which patterns emerge or break down. Mainly from the viewpoint of bifurcations in dynamical systems, it investigates them using numerical simulation and numerical bifurcation analysis. Verified numerical computation, which uses computers to rigorously prove results, is also one of its research tools.
Aiichi Yamasaki, Associate Professor

The Yamasaki Lab studies the strong approximation theorem for algebraic groups and Noether's problem, in the field of number theory. The inverse Galois problem and the linear Noether problem are also research themes. Through collaborative research, the lab investigates the rationality of algebraic tori and the Hasse norm principle.
Yikan Liu, Associate Professor

The Liu Lab studies the theory of partial differential equations and inverse problems in the field of applied mathematics. The lab deals with problems of determining, from observed data, the causes of a phenomenon and the unknown values in an equation. It investigates fractional-order diffusion equations and models of viscoelastic materials, together with their applications to medicine, environmental science, materials science, and other fields.
Kaoru Hiraga, Lecturer

The Hiraga Lab studies automorphic forms and automorphic representations in the field of number theory. Its research theme is trace formulas for algebraic groups.
Yuji Yanagido, Visiting Professor

The Actuarial Science Division is a collaborative course between Kyoto University and the Institute of Actuaries of Japan. Visiting professors dispatched by the Institute of Actuaries of Japan teach master's students in the insurance mathematics program, bringing in the perspective of practitioners. In a weekly insurance mathematics lab seminar, students study life insurance and pension mathematics, risk management, mathematical finance, and more.

The Quantum Materials Lab studies a variety of physical phenomena that occur in strongly correlated electron systems, in which electrons in a solid interact strongly with one another. At temperatures far below room temperature, phenomena such as superconductivity occur that are far removed from everyday experience. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), the lab investigates a variety of superconductors and magnetic materials from an atomic-level perspective. It makes measurements under extremely low temperatures, high pressure, and strong magnetic fields, aiming to discover and understand new phenomena.

The Quantum Condensed Matter Lab studies quantum materials, including strongly correlated electron systems. In quantum materials, interactions between electrons and spin–orbit coupling become intricately entangled, giving rise to exotic states such as high-temperature superconductivity and quantum spin liquids. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, the lab aims to make electronic states directly visible at atomic resolution and to clarify their origin. The lab renewed its members and started under a new structure in the 2025 academic year.

The Low Temperature Physics Lab (Hashimoto Lab) aims to elucidate new quantum states created by electron correlations and topology. Its main subjects include unconventional superconductivity, quantum spin liquids, and topological materials. Building on cryogenic techniques, the lab combines precision measurements of material properties, original measurement technologies, and devices made by microfabrication. Newly established in December 2025, the lab also studies superfluid helium.

The Quantum Optics Lab uses cutting-edge optical and quantum control techniques to control atoms and light down to the quantum level, creating and studying new quantum states. It uses atoms such as ytterbium (Yb), cooled to extremely low temperatures with lasers. Its research rests on three pillars: quantum simulation, the search for new physics through precision measurement, and quantum computing with cold atoms. The lab centers on experiments, while its members also study and conduct theoretical research to support the experiments.

The Optical Properties of Matter Lab uses cutting-edge optical technology to search for new phenomena that emerge from the interaction between light and matter, and to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of excited states in materials. Its research centers on high-intensity terahertz light and the electrons and holes in photoexcited semiconductors, and covers a wide range of topics. At Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS), the lab also conducts collaborative research on bio-related materials and new compounds.
