Masako Myowa, Professor
0 student voices
The Myowa Lab seeks to empirically elucidate how the brain and mind of humans as a biological species work, through the timescales of development and evolution. Like the shape of the body, the invisible workings of the brain and mind are products of evolution, and the lab believes it is necessary to understand when, how, and why they arose. The lab conducts studies with the cooperation of infants and parent-child pairs, and has recently published findings on the relationship between gut microbiota in early childhood and mental development.
Satoru Saito, Professor
0 student voices
From the standpoint of cognitive psychology, the Saito Lab studies memory, language, and the mechanisms that control mental processes. Every Monday afternoon, the lab holds the MDM (Memory Discussion Meeting), where members present research and review the literature, and discuss the functions and mechanisms of cognition and memory broadly. The lab has carried out joint research not only with universities in Japan but also with researchers abroad, including at the University of Cambridge and the University of Geneva, and graduate students and postdoctoral researchers have built their skills through these opportunities. Graduate students are admitted through the Educational Cognitive Psychology Division. Applicants are expected to be students who have written, or plan to write, psychology research using quantitative data (including a graduation thesis).
MANALO Emmanuel, Professor
0 student voices
From the standpoint of educational psychology, the Manalo Lab studies effective ways of learning and teaching. The lab also focuses on how diagrams that learners draw themselves can be used for learning, thinking, communication, and problem solving. Another pillar of the research is developing thinking skills such as critical thinking and metacognition, as well as foreign language learning and communication skills. The lab belongs to the Educational Cognitive Psychology Division of the Graduate School of Education.

PARK Joonha, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Social Cognition and Cultural Psychology Lab studies how the culture, society, and ecological environment in which people live shape the workings of the mind. Mainly from the perspectives of cultural psychology and cross-cultural psychology, the lab aims to clarify both the diversity and the commonalities of psychology across different societies. The lab does not treat culture as a mere matter of differences between countries. It is interested in the mental processes involved when people build relationships with others, adapt to society, and make sense of the society around them. Beyond the lab's existing projects, it also places importance on students formulating their own new questions and developing their own research.
Yasuhiro Tanaka, Professor

The Clinical Psychology Course aims to deepen practical knowledge and theory for approaching problems of the mind, human beings, and society through theory, practice, and empirical research in clinical psychology. Instead of separate labs led by individual professors, the course as a whole supervises graduate students. Faculty research areas include psychotherapy based on Jungian psychology, images and psychic experience, psychoanalysis and supervision, and psychotherapy in adolescence. Some faculty members also study the relationship between social change and psychological trends, creativity in clinical practice, the giving of meaning to painful experiences, and the relationship between those who provide support and those who receive it.
