The Neuroinformatics Lab (Kamitani Lab) studies how the brain represents and processes information, and develops technology that reads out the contents of the mind from brain activity and makes them visible. Bridging neuroscience and AI, the lab works in four areas: brain decoding, NeuroAI, brain-machine interfaces, and brain science and art. The lab also collaborates closely with the ATR Brain Information Communication Research Laboratory.

The Psychological Informatics Lab (Kumada-Nakashima Lab) aims to clarify the mechanisms of human cognition and behavior from an interdisciplinary perspective spanning psychology, brain science, engineering, and informatics, and to return the results to society. Among human cognitive functions, the lab focuses especially on attention and executive function, investigating their psychological mechanisms and neuroscientific foundations. Based on behavioral and cognitive psychology experiments, and also using eye movement measurement and measurement of brain function, the lab approaches the mechanisms of the brain and mind.

Humans perceive the outside world from signals captured by sensory organs such as the eyes, make decisions, and communicate with the people around them. The Cognitive Informatics Lab studies the information processing that underlies these human cognitive abilities, using psychological and behavioral experiments, measurement of brain activity, and computer simulation. In particular, the lab focuses on comparing the characteristics of information processing in AI (artificial neural networks) and in humans, and also develops information and communication technologies based on findings from brain and cognitive science.
