The Automatic Control Engineering Lab (the Hagiwara Lab) studies the theory of system control and its applications. Control is the technology of keeping the motion of things in a desired state and making them follow changes in a target, and it is essential for making products and equipment work properly. How far the power of hardware can be exploited depends on the control strategy, and the role of system control theory is to present general theory that makes possible the best control approaching those limits.

The System Creation Lab studies next-generation wireless human sensing technology that fuses radio waves and AI. Every day, people unconsciously emit a vast amount of information from the body, such as breathing, heartbeat, posture, gestures, facial expressions, and changes in emotion. However, the human body has a complex shape, moves constantly, and changes depending on the environment, so measuring and understanding people accurately is not easy.

The Electromagnetic Energy Engineering Lab studies the theory and applications of computational electromagnetics. The shift from engine-powered cars to motor-driven vehicles and the use of renewable energy are advancing worldwide. As key technologies for designing and developing electrical and electronic devices suited to these trends, the lab studies the mathematics of electromagnetic fields and electrical and electronic materials, and computer analysis methods based on them.

The Space Radio Engineering Lab (Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere, Kojima Lab) studies the electromagnetic environment of outer space and the space systems needed to use it as part of the humanosphere in which people live. The lab approaches this from both engineering and science perspectives. Its research fields range from space systems engineering, orbital dynamics, and space plasma physics to electronics and radio engineering. The lab is deeply involved in space missions in Japan and abroad, and carries out research with JAXA, NASA, ESA, and many collaborators.

The Microwave Energy Transmission Lab (Shinohara Lab, Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere) focuses mainly on research on space solar power stations. The lab also conducts research and development on wireless power transfer, which sends energy by microwave-band radio waves, and on applications of microwave heating.

The Radio Science Simulation Lab (Ebihara Lab, Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere) studies disturbances that occur in the space around Earth, such as auroras, magnetic storms, and variations in the radiation belts. Using computer simulations, the lab investigates the flow of energy and matter from the Sun to Earth and the interactions between particles and electromagnetic waves. The lab aims to predict the effects on social infrastructure such as power grids and satellites, and thereby contribute to a safe and secure society and to the use of space.

The Advanced Electrical Machinery Engineering Lab was established in 2017 as an endowed chair of the Graduate School of Engineering, and studies advanced electrical machinery systems for realizing a low-carbon society. Returning to first principles for the electromagnetic phenomena in rotating reference frames, the lab works to establish a general way of describing energy conversion between electrical and mechanical forms. The lab considers a wide range of applications, including transportation equipment centered on electric vehicles, industrial equipment, and distributed power sources.

The Extreme Electronic Functionality Lab (Yonezawa Lab) studies emergent phenomena that arise when many of the particles that make up matter come together, such as superconductivity, magnetism, terahertz oscillation, and field emission. The lab aims to discover and understand fundamental physical phenomena and their functionality, and to create innovative technologies based on them. Two subgroups, the Superconductivity Group and the Vacuum Electronics Group, carry out research and education in collaboration. In FY2026, the lab changed its name from the Integrated Functional Engineering Lab.

The Solid-State Quantum Physics and Engineering Lab (Shiraishi Lab) studies quantum spintronics, which focuses on controlling spin angular momentum, one of the quantum properties of electrons. Drawing on modern physics such as quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, relativity, and topology, the lab conducts a wide range of research from fundamentals to applications. Its results have been published in many top-tier academic journals, and the lab leads this field worldwide.
Shigeki Takeuchi, Professor

The Photonic Quantum Information Engineering Lab (Takeuchi Lab) aims to pursue the mysterious properties of quantum systems and nurture the seeds of entirely new science and technology. Quanta such as photons and electrons behave completely differently from classical particles. If their quantum states can be fully controlled, quantum computers and quantum metrology that can reveal previously unobservable phenomena are expected to become possible. The lab conducts research on quantum information science using photons.
