The Fluid Dynamics Lab studies fast, complex flows, such as the shock waves and turbulence that form around supersonic vehicles. It develops simple, reliable methods for computing such flows and applies them to the analysis of aerospace fluid problems. Another theme is experimental research on rarefied gases and flows at the micro and nano scales. In such gases, flows are generated even near a wall that is at rest. Using this effect, the lab develops devices that separate a gas mixture into its components, among other things.

The Fluid Mathematics Lab studies fluids in states far from local equilibrium, mainly through theory. From a mesoscopic standpoint based on kinetic equations, the lab seeks a deep understanding of the various phenomena that occur in fluids. It aims to open up new areas of application in fluid dynamics and gas dynamics that conventional approaches could not reach.

The Propulsion Engineering Lab conducts basic and applied research on plasma (ionized gas) and reactive gases related to the propulsion of aerospace vehicles. Along with their dynamical properties, the lab focuses on the reactions of atoms, molecules, and ions in gases and their interactions with solid surfaces. Centered on experiments and also using numerical simulation, the lab tackles challenges in advanced technologies such as semiconductors, in addition to aerospace engineering.

The Control Engineering Lab studies system control theory for handling aerospace systems. Its themes include nonlinear control, optimal control, stochastic systems, model order reduction, robotics, and machine learning. The lab aims to develop mechanics-based modeling and control methods for large-scale aerospace systems. It pursues its research through various approaches, including devising theory, numerical simulation, and experiments on real hardware.

The Functional Structural Mechanics Lab studies solids with complex internal structures, such as advanced composite materials and metamaterials, as well as structures with complex shapes. The lab clarifies their dynamic, nonlinear mechanical behavior and how elastic waves propagate through them. Using theory, numerical analysis, and experiments, the lab aims to build the fundamental science underlying high-performance structural systems in a wide range of fields, including aerospace engineering.
