The Social Media Lab aims to build an information environment in which all kinds of useful information from around the world can be shared and used. This has been a great dream of researchers in databases and information retrieval for decades. With the development of computers and the Internet, it is gradually ceasing to be a mere fantasy. As the underlying technologies, the lab studies techniques for collecting, analyzing, and extracting a wide variety of information, and techniques for flexibly searching it.

The Agreement Informatics Lab focuses on collective intelligence in which people and computers or AI agents reach agreement and cooperate with one another. By having people reach agreement and cooperate with AI agents that have become highly accurate, the lab aims to bring out an unprecedented collective intelligence and realize new social systems. The lab pursues both theoretical research that aims at lofty ideals and the commercialization of that research as business.

The Computer Algorithms Lab (Minato Lab) studies the design and analysis of algorithms, which are the foundation of all information processing technology. Merely by refining an algorithm, computation time can sometimes be cut by tens or even hundreds of times. The lab applies algorithmic techniques for handling "discrete structures" such as sets, logic, graphs, and combinations to various fields, including artificial intelligence and knowledge processing.

The Computer Architecture Lab studies the principles and technologies for designing the fundamental structure of computers and performing computation efficiently. To realize computation based on new principles, such as quantum computation, as an actual working computer, new architectures are needed. The lab explores design principles for next-generation computers, represented by quantum computers, aiming to realize innovative computing platforms and to deepen quantum information science.

The Computer Software Lab focuses on programming languages, studying the theory and applications for building efficient and reliable software. The lab works on the theory and applications of program verification techniques based on mathematical logic, such as type theory and model checking. Drawing on the ideas of functional programming and object-oriented programming, the lab also designs and develops programming languages that allow highly abstract descriptions.

The Supercomputing Lab studies computing methods that bring out the maximum performance of supercomputers and GPUs. The lab develops linear solvers that quickly solve large-scale systems of linear equations, algorithms for GPUs, and methods for coordinating many compute nodes efficiently.

Yasuo Okabe, Professor

The Advanced Network Lab (Okabe Lab) is a cooperating chair of the Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies and accepts students from the Communication and Information Systems Course. The lab studies networking and security, including support for responding to cyberattacks, roaming and privacy on public wireless LANs, and the secure operation of IoT devices.
