At the Forest Production Control Lab, faculty belonging to the Fukuoka, Miyazaki, and Hokkaido University Forests carry out education and research using the university forests. The lab explores the distribution and physiological characteristics of trees and climbing plants, their ways of life and growth, and their roles in forest ecosystems and material cycles, aiming to harmonize ecosystem conservation with the use of forest resources. The academic fields it covers are quite broad, centered on forests and trees in the field, and include dendrology, wood science, tree physiology, forest ecology, and ethnology.

The Silviculture Lab studies forests in Japan and abroad, as well as green spaces and parks in urban and suburban areas, from the perspectives of ecology, physiology, and genetics and breeding. The lab invites anyone interested in living things in general, not only forests and trees, to join. Assistant Professor Sakuta works on forest regeneration and management, forest tree breeding, disease control, and greening, based on the physiology and ecology of trees. Assistant Professor Tsuyama is attempting to create improved trees based on information obtained from research on photosynthesis.

Eiji Gotoh, Professor

The Wood Resource Science Lab studies how plants, which cannot move, adapt to diverse environments, from the perspectives of physiology, molecular biology, and evolutionary ecology. Professor Gotoh's group focuses on light, one of the environmental factors surrounding plants, and aims to clarify the mechanisms of plant responses to it from the molecular level to the ecological level. Assistant Professor Takahashi's group conducts research on the evolution and ecology of wild plants in the field, both in Japan and abroad.

The Forest Chemistry Lab studies how lignin, a component of tree cell walls, and terpenes, the aroma compounds of forests, are produced and what roles they play. The lab investigates biosynthetic processes and biological defense mechanisms at the levels of cells, enzymes, and genes. Its research also covers plant-to-plant communication via volatile compounds and the analysis of lignin degradation by mushrooms (basidiomycetes).

The Forest Ecosphere Environmental Resource Sciences Lab focuses on the functions of forest bioresources and studies how to build a livable, sustainable society that is mindful of the environment. In addition to examining how natural aroma compounds affect the mind and body, the lab searches for components in mushrooms and aims to clarify their mechanisms of action. The lab also conducts research toward developing foods with function claims and cosmetic ingredients. Professor Kume studies the evolution of land plants and plant gravity response across disciplines.

The Wood Materials Engineering Lab conducts education and research on the production, physical conversion, material design and development, and structural use of wood resources, in harmony with global environmental conservation and the use of forest resources. Living comfortably in wooden structures over the long term requires understanding the physical properties and strength performance of wood and wood-based materials and assessing the safety of members in existing buildings, so the lab pursues research on performance evaluation. Assistant Professor Hasegawa works on nondestructive evaluation, using ultrasound and other methods to examine wood without damaging it. Associate Professor Andi Hermawan works on wood drying methods, modification technologies, and the development of wood-based materials using waste wood and natural adhesives.

The Bioresource Chemistry Lab studies the precise nanostructures of forest-derived polysaccharides and the interfacial functions that arise from them. Using structural information on natural polysaccharides as a guide, the lab works on creating biomedical functions and developing cosmetic and agricultural materials. The lab has a Biomedical Group and a Cosmetics and Agriculture Group, and a Frontier Group is in the planning stage. On the lab's website, the lab is also introduced under the name 'Kitaoka Lab.'

The Polymer Materials Science Lab studies how to use polymers made by living organisms (resource polymers), such as cellulose, as materials. Its research aims to create functional materials, ranging from basic research on how molecules assemble to building structures with controlled assembly. Using rheology, which examines how materials deform and flow, and structural observation by scattering methods, the lab investigates the relationship between the structure and the physical properties of materials. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name "Resource Polymer Science Lab."

The Biomaterial Design Lab studies design processes for making use of biomaterials, including cellulose, as materials. Its slogan is "Learn from living organisms, make use of them, and go beyond them!", and it aims to design processes for making environmentally harmonious biomaterials. The lab explores nano- and micro-scale techniques for controlling interactions at interfaces, and investigates the relationship between the resulting three-dimensional structures and the properties that emerge in them.

The Marine Biology Lab aims to uncover the mechanisms of reproduction in fish and to contribute to the fisheries industry and food production. Using chub mackerel, Japanese anchovy, tiger pufferfish, and sex-changing wrasses as experimental models, the lab studies the mechanisms of sex and reproduction at the molecular, cellular, and physiological levels. The lab also researches and develops new life science technologies aimed at the future of fisheries, such as genome editing and stem cell manipulation. The lab is part of the Aqua-Bioresource Innovation Center (ABRIC) of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University.
