Hiroko Nishida, Professor
0 student voices
In Professor Hiroko Nishida's lab, research covers music theory and analysis, as well as their cultural background. The lab also studies a wide range of contemporary music cultures, especially the relationship between music content and management. It investigates how Western music theory was received in modern Japan, and the history of music theory centered on Germany and Austria. The lab is led by a faculty member of the Acoustic Design Course in the School of Design.

Gerard Bastiaan Remijn, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Gerard Bastiaan Remijn belongs to the Acoustic Design Course in the School of Design, and his field of specialization is perceptual psychology. In the graduate program, he is in charge of the Acoustic Design Course in the Department of Design of the Graduate School of Design. In the Faculty of Design, the research organization for graduate education, he belongs to the Acoustic Design Division.

Kazuhiko Kawahara, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Kazuhiko Kawahara studies performance evaluation of acoustic systems such as loudspeakers. Measuring the characteristics of loudspeakers whose radiation mechanism differs from that of conventional electrodynamic loudspeakers is considered to require new measurement methods. The lab examines evaluation methods that use measurements such as directivity and sound intensity. The lab also conducts research on conveying applause in live viewing, and on education in technical ear training, which develops sensitivity in telling sounds apart.

Kazuhiro Jo, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Kazuhiro Jo's lab specializes in media art and conducts practice-based research centered on creating artworks. Its background is in acoustics and interaction design. The lab engages critically with media technology and explores forms of expression that go beyond mere demonstrations of new technology.

Katsuya Yamauchi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Katsuya Yamauchi's lab studies environmental noise and sound design from the perspective of the psychology and sensory evaluation of people listening to sounds. Recently, the lab has been particularly interested in what future vehicle sounds should be like, and focuses on the sounds of next-generation vehicles such as hybrid and electric vehicles. It also works on predicting road traffic noise and designing signal sounds.

Yukiyasu Yoshinaga, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Yukiyasu Yoshinaga studies "line recognition," which enables computers to understand images. The lab investigates a line recognition method, based on the distribution of orientations of intensity gradient vectors, that is not affected by contrast. By applying this method to medical images, the lab is building computer-aided diagnosis systems. The professor belongs to the Acoustic Design Course in the Faculty of Design, with specialties in image processing and signal processing.

Naohisa Inoe, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Naohisa Inoe conducts research and education on sound absorption and sound insulation of materials, in the fields of architectural acoustics and computational acoustics. The listed research themes are the development of methods for measuring the performance of acoustic materials, and the development of acoustic materials and structures. Assistant Professor Inoe is listed as a faculty member of the Acoustic Design Course in the School of Design.

Mizuki Somura, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Mizuki Somura, who specializes in musicology (Japanese music history), works on musical analysis of traditional Japanese music, especially modern biwa music. Focusing on Satsuma biwa and Chikuzen biwa, the professor examines the characteristics of biwa narration and melodies. The professor also studies how music spread in modern Japan through sound media such as radio broadcasts and records. Belonging to the Acoustic Design division, the professor teaches classes on music and sound outside Western music, including Japanese music history, Asian music history, and ethnomusicology.

Emi Hasuo, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Emi Hasuo studies the mechanisms of rhythm perception (time perception), which underlies communication through speech and music. The professor investigates how the rhythm of a sequence of sounds is heard, looking at the influence of the beat and at assimilation and contrast between adjacent time intervals. The professor is a faculty member of the Acoustic Design Course in the School of Design and the Graduate School of Design, specializing in cognitive science and music psychology.

Tomoko Hojo, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
In experimental music, Assistant Professor Tomoko Hojo studies sound art and performance centered on voice, silence, and listening. The research focuses on forms of the voice such as screaming and silence, and on their politics. In education, the lab emphasizes thinking about sound in relation to the body, place, memory, and social context, and offers classes that combine lectures, fieldwork, production, presentations, and critiques. Assistant Professor Hojo is in charge of graduation research and Special Research in Design (Acoustic Design Course).
