Yukiyasu Yoshinaga, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Yukiyasu Yoshinaga's lab studies how computers recognize lines in images. The lab investigates a line recognition method that is unaffected by contrast, based on the distribution of orientations of luminance gradient vectors. It applies this method to medical images and is also building computer-aided diagnosis systems.

Naohisa Inoe, Assistant Professor

The Architectural Acoustics Lab conducts research and education on the sound absorption and sound insulation of materials, in the fields of architectural acoustics and computational acoustics. The lab belongs to the Acoustic Design Course in the Faculty of Design and is led by Assistant Professor Naohisa Inoe. Its research themes are developing methods for measuring the performance of acoustic materials, and developing acoustic materials and structures.

Mizuki Somura, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Mizuki Somura analyzes traditional Japanese music, especially modern biwa music (Satsuma biwa and Chikuzen biwa). The lab also studies how music spread in modern Japan through sound media such as radio broadcasting and records. In classes, Assistant Professor Somura teaches subjects on music and sound outside Western music, such as Japanese music history, Asian music history, and ethnomusicology.

Emi Hasuo, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The cognitive science lab of Assistant Professor Emi Hasuo conducts research to clarify the mechanisms of "rhythm perception (time perception)," which underlies communication through spoken language and music. One of its current themes is examining how the beat affects rhythm perception. The lab also studies assimilation and contrast between adjacent time intervals, and individual differences in how the filled-duration illusion appears. Recently, through joint research, it has also been working on auditory research, such as whether alternating sounds are heard as a single stream or split into two.

Tomoko Hojo, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Assistant Professor Tomoko Hojo centers on experimental music and sound art, studying voice, silence, and the sounds of place. Its themes are the politics of the voice in screaming, voice, silence, and the body, and the memory and listening of place. Alongside its research, the lab also presents works in Japan and abroad. In education, the lab emphasizes a perspective that considers sound in connection with the body, place, memory, and social context.

Yasuki Murakami, Assistant Professor

The Auditory Information Processing Lab mainly studies the mechanical vibrations of the auditory periphery that are caused by sound waves. Because these vibrations are correlated with sound perception, the lab aims to clarify how humans hear sound from the perspective of the auditory periphery. Its research methods include numerical simulation, noninvasive physiological experiments, and perceptual experiments. The lab is also interested in applying the findings from this research in engineering.

Kohei Wakamiya, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The speech science lab of Assistant Professor Kohei Wakamiya aims to understand how humans produce voices with such a wide variety of voice qualities. The lab wants to build a speech production model that imitates the mechanism of human speech, and is currently studying methods for measuring the movements of the articulators inside the mouth. It also works on the intelligibility of interrupted or degraded speech, perceptual evaluation of hoarseness (a husky, rough voice), and detection of infectious diseases from the sound of coughs.
Wei Shi, Associate Professor

The Information Visualization (Wei Shi) Lab is the lab of Associate Professor Wei Shi at the Faculty of Design, Kyushu University. Its listed research fields are information visualization, software engineering, e-learning, and educational technology. The professor is listed as faculty of the Department of Design in the School of Design, and of the Department of Design in the Graduate School of Design.

Saya Makihara, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Saya Makihara specializes in arts management, cultural policy, co-creative arts practice, and collaborative/participatory evaluation of cultural projects. Her main current research question is how co-creative arts practice with people who have mental illness or disabilities changes the awareness of people who are not themselves affected. In regional collaboration art projects and the Hall Management Engineer training program, she is in charge of project management, student supervision, and evaluation. Moving between practice in the field and research, she explores the possibilities of co-creative arts practice.
