A dynamical system is a mathematical formulation of rules that describe time evolution. Typical examples are the equations of motion (ordinary differential equations) that describe the motion of celestial bodies and spinning tops. Dynamical systems also appear in many areas of physics and in models of chemical reactions, ecology, and economics. Mathematical research itself also naturally defines many kinds of dynamical systems, and the goal of dynamical systems theory is to investigate their properties. The faculty in this field specialize in dynamical systems as well as applied analysis and several complex variables, among other areas.

The Infinite-Dimensional Integrable Systems research and education group studies equations and systems that appear in nonlinear waves, statistical physics, and field theory. Even systems that would normally seem difficult to analyze can sometimes be studied rigorously and in detail thanks to a good underlying mathematical structure, and this field mainly deals with such cases. The field is described as one where algebra, geometry, analysis, and applications all intersect, letting students experience the original appeal of mathematics. The faculty specialize in discrete differential geometry, integrable systems, mathematical physics, quantum topology, and more.

The field of mathematical physics here studies mathematical problems that originate in quantum field theory, statistical mechanics, and fluid dynamics. It aims to solve these problems using analytic methods such as functional analysis and probability theory. It is not bound by existing methodologies, and where necessary also aims to develop new mathematics. The research areas of the faculty members include quantum field theory, spectral analysis, quantum topology, and optimal transport theory.

The field of mathematical statistics conducts research that theoretically clarifies the properties of the statistical and computational methods needed to analyze various kinds of data. It proposes new data analysis methods, verifies their effectiveness, and also conducts applied research in various sciences. The research keywords of the faculty members include mathematical statistics, statistical science, computational statistics, sparse estimation, multivariate analysis, Bayesian estimation, and model selection.

The field of number theory studies various mathematical objects related, directly or indirectly, to numbers. Its objects of study include algebraic varieties and motives, automorphic forms and automorphic representations, and the associated Galois representations and zeta functions and L-functions. Analogies between number-theoretic objects and topological objects (especially in knot theory) are also studied. The methods draw on algebra, geometry, and analysis alike; the field has close ties to representation theory, and computers can be actively used.

Operator theory and operator algebras is a field that studies individual linear operators on Hilbert spaces (infinite matrices) and the algebraic systems they form. The field is described as one whose real appeal lies in analyzing noncommutativity and infinite dimensionality. The faculty members list operator algebras, group actions, spectral analysis, and quantum field theory among their research keywords. At Kyushu University, faculty in the Analysis Division of the Faculty of Mathematics are in charge of this field.

In the field of optimization, the lab treats problems from social phenomena and from science and engineering as constrained extremum problems, and studies the mathematical theory and methods for finding their optimal solutions. The faculty members' research includes optimization problems involving continuous variables, decision-making problems using dynamic programming, and the use of computer algebra and artificial intelligence. Many of the faculty members belong to the Institute of Mathematics for Industry while also holding concurrent positions in the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science and the Graduate School of Mathematics.

The probability theory field studies probability theory, the mathematical framework for logically analyzing random phenomena. Because the world is full of many kinds of randomness, probability theory has become a research field of wide scope. Each faculty member works on a different subject, such as stochastic analysis, point processes, quantum field theory, and interacting particle systems.

The Representation Theory and Harmonic Analysis field studies sets on which algebraic structures such as groups act, focusing on objects that are invariant under the action as well as objects that are analogous to invariants. When the set consists of functions, the field connects with analysis, and when it has a geometric structure, it connects with geometry as well. It is a field that can be approached not only through algebra but also from many other standpoints. Faculty members of the Faculty of Mathematics, the Institute of Mathematics for Industry, and the Faculty of Arts and Science are part of this field.

The Topology field studies geometric objects such as shapes through the properties that do not change under continuous deformation. It is a relatively new field within mathematics. Faculty research spans a range of perspectives that vary from professor to professor, including algebraic topology, singularity theory, low-dimensional topology, and applied topology. At Kyushu University, the Department of Mathematics in the School of Science and the Graduate School of Mathematics introduce the faculty together as one of their research and education fields.
