The Organic Reaction Chemistry Lab develops environmentally friendly synthetic methods that use transition metal complexes as catalysts. Aiming to introduce the “desired functional group” at the “desired position” in a molecule, the lab works toward zero-emission organic synthesis reactions. The lab develops catalytic oxidation reactions that use oxidants that produce no “waste” by-products, such as oxygen in air and hydrogen peroxide. The lab also studies methods that use the oxygen atoms of water to make compounds labeled with oxygen isotopes.

The Biocatalytic Chemistry Lab focuses on the metabolic pathways of bioactive substances produced by microorganisms and plants, aiming to understand the chemical principles of life phenomena in nature. The lab discovers new enzymes that catalyze chemical transformations that are difficult to achieve with synthetic organic chemistry reactions, and studies the mechanisms of those reactions in detail. Based on the principles of catalysis, the lab also aims to develop practical biocatalysts that outperform natural enzymes. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name “Ushimaru Lab.”

The Radiochemistry Lab works with radioisotopes (RI) and the materials they are made from to study chemistry related to nuclear energy and nuclear fusion. The lab works on ozone chemistry, nuclide separation chemistry, and isotope separation chemistry, as well as interdisciplinary areas that combine them. The lab is located in the Ito Campus laboratory of the Center for Integrated Isotope Safety Management, and it is a cooperating research group of the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science. According to the lab website, it accepts applications from prospective undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students at any time, and it also welcomes lab visits.

Kosei Yamauchi, Associate Professor

The Functional Coordination Chemistry (Kosei Yamauchi) Lab uses metal complexes as catalysts to study reactions that drive water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction. Centered on metal complexes, the lab studies hydrogen evolution catalysts, oxygen evolution catalysts, and the splitting of water with visible light. Associate Professor Yamauchi belongs to the Institute for Advanced Study, and is also introduced as a member of the Coordination Chemistry Lab in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science.
