The Environmental Energy Systems Lab studies strategies and policies that can help solve long-term energy problems, such as the world's energy supply and the environmental challenges society faces. Through the development of analytical methods and the use of computational models, the lab seeks to clarify the role that science and technology play in shaping better energy and environmental policy. Researchers from diverse backgrounds work on building decision-making frameworks that evaluate future scenarios from both "macro and micro" perspectives. The lab aims to contribute to realizing sustainable energy systems in Japan, Asia, and the world.

The Water Environment Engineering Lab (WEEL) studies the removal of pollutants from water and the generation of renewable energy from waste. Its targets include heavy metals such as arsenic and chromium, radioactive elements such as cesium and strontium, and antibiotics. The lab also researches recovering nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrate from wastewater. It also works on developing bioenergy, including methane and hydrogen production by anaerobic digestion and power generation by microbial fuel cells. The lab is a multinational research team that collaborates with scientists and engineers in Japan and other countries.

The Yoon Lab develops new enzyme catalysts that efficiently catalyze small molecules (hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water) and analyzes their biochemical properties. The lab is developing highly efficient and selective CO2 hydrogenation reactions by fusing hydrogenase and formate dehydrogenase, a combination that outperforms platinum catalysts. The lab also isolates a light-harvesting antenna protein (phycocyanin) from a new thermophilic cyanobacterium and is developing a visible-light-responsive hydroxylation system. The lab's website introduces it as a lab of the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research at Kyushu University.
