The Information Security & Multimedia Security Lab studies security technologies that protect society. Based on the concept of the "Internet of Things" (IoT), the lab considers that in a society where not only people but also things are connected to one another, an attacker taking control of the network could cause major damage. The lab is affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, and the Department of Information Science and Technology in the Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering.

The Cognitive Science Lab studies the relationship between people and technology using diverse psychological perspectives and experimental methods. In traffic settings, the lab uses tools such as driving simulators to investigate support for drivers and communication between automated vehicles and people. Human cognition and behavior in virtual reality spaces are also subjects of research. Education and research in traffic science are also carried out in the Department of Automotive Science at the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences.

The Machine Learning, Data Mining, and AI Lab conducts research on machine learning, data mining, and AI. As one example, the lab uncovers human thought patterns and biases by studying "bad explanatory texts about data," a tricky kind of misinformation. The lab also works on recommendation systems that suggest products and other items, anomaly detection from images and video, and autonomous mobile robots. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Suzuki Lab."

The main research themes of the Machine Learning Theory Lab are online decision making, computational learning theory, and computational complexity. Based on the principles of the theory of computation, Prof. Takimoto conducts broad research on online decision making, learning theory, and computational complexity theory. Prof. Hatano works on computer science, particularly machine learning. In education, Prof. Hatano is in charge of the Information Science Course in the Department of Physics at the School of Science, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the School of Engineering, and the Department of Information Science and Technology at the Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering.

The Multi-Agent Lab studies multi-agent systems, in which multiple intelligent entities (agents) exist. The lab focuses on systems like the Internet, where humans and agents (software) coexist, and describes problems such as lab assignment and e-commerce within the frameworks of game theory and microeconomics. Using techniques from algorithms and optimization, the lab designs and analyzes systems and social institutions.

The Natural Language Processing Lab studies techniques for processing text in languages such as Japanese and English by computer. The lab studies the classification of sentences and documents based on parameter estimation of statistical language models, and the estimation of similarity between sentences and between documents using deep learning. Using models similar to statistical language models, the lab also works on the analysis of odor information.

The 3D Multimedia Content Lab studies how to support the development of application software that uses 3D graphics. From the perspective of software architecture, the lab investigates how software components should be connected to reduce development costs. Recently, the lab has also been doing research and development on development support environments for video games, educational content, data presentation technology for museums, and applied systems of virtual reality (VR). On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Yoshihiro Okada Lab."

The Intelligent Systems Lab develops next-generation artificial intelligence with robustness and adaptability. Today's state-of-the-art AI cannot play 9x9 Go even after learning 19x19 Go, and its image recognition can be fooled by changing just one pixel. The lab therefore aims to improve robustness and adaptability by developing new mechanisms and paradigms of intelligence. Lab members can use state-of-the-art CPU and GPU servers.

The Statistical Learning Lab researches the development of methods for analyzing biological data. Its main tools are statistics, optimization, and data mining. Besides methods for predicting protein function and compound activity, the lab also develops machine learning methods for the manufacturing sector. The lab cannot provide guidance on wet-lab experiments, but it can provide guidance on data analysis.

The Constructive Electronics Lab aims to extract useful technologies from biological neural circuits and apply them to next-generation information-processing hardware. The Yajima Group covers materials, devices, and circuits, while the Kawakami Group covers circuits, architecture, and computational principles, and the two groups carry out research in collaboration. The Yajima Group studies materials that show phase transitions and devices that use protons, and the Kawakami Group studies computers built from new optical and superconducting devices. On the lab's website, the lab is also introduced under the name "Yajima-Kawakami Lab."
