The Interfacial Thermofluids Lab studies wetting, the phenomenon in which a liquid spreads over a surface or evaporates, from the perspectives of heat and flow. Classical theories to date have mainly dealt with idealized liquids that are pure and do not undergo phase change. The lab aims to build a framework for wetting that also applies to real liquids that are volatile and made up of multiple components. Combining experiments, theory, and numerical simulation, the lab works with researchers from other fields toward extreme cooling, advanced energy conversion, and state-of-the-art medical testing.

The Micromechanics Lab studies the behavior of fatigue cracks in metallic materials at the micro and nano scales to clarify the mechanisms by which fatigue fracture occurs. The lab focuses on how the microstructure of a material affects fatigue cracks. Recently, it has been working on very high cycle fatigue of high-strength Mg-Zn-Y alloys and on clarifying the fracture mechanisms of LPSO-phase-strengthened Mg alloys through analysis of ultrafine microstructures.

The Thermal Energy Utilization Science Lab (known on its website as Saha Laboratory) aims to solve environmental and energy problems in the fields of air conditioning, refrigeration, and thermal energy storage. The lab has developed a number of adsorption refrigeration cycles that can use even low-temperature waste heat of around 50°C. Its research covers the properties of promising adsorbent and adsorbate pairs, the thermophysical properties of next-generation refrigerants, and carbon-neutral energy conversion systems. The lab belongs to the Thermal Science and Engineering Division of the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) and conducts joint research with universities around the world.
