Hemanta Hazarika, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Hemanta Hazarika of the Faculty of Co-creation Studies specializes in geotechnical engineering, earthquake disaster prevention, and environmental geotechnics. The professor says that concern is growing about disasters caused by climate change accompanying global warming, and that developing technologies to adapt to climate change is an urgent need for society. The professor also points out that natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, and floods are occurring on a large scale around the world, and says that disaster reduction and environmental protection will be made part of the education in the Faculty of Co-creation Studies. In the Faculty of Co-creation Studies, Professor Hazarika teaches courses such as 'Natural Disasters and Resiliency' and 'Geotechnical Disaster Prevention and Sustainability'.
Hironobu Kan, Professor
0 student voices
Building on physical geography, the lab studies the topography of shallow seafloors such as coral reefs, their formation history, and the history of environmental change. The main study regions are the Ryukyu Islands, islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and Australia. With the sea as its theme, the lab carries out interdisciplinary research spanning the natural sciences to the humanities and social sciences, advancing a comprehensive understanding of the environment.
Tamao Kasahara, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Tamao Kasahara of the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation specializes in river hydrology and biogeochemistry and studies the movement of water and materials in mountain streams and rivers in forests. Mountain streams sometimes cause disasters, but they play various roles in the watershed, such as supplying water, sediment, and nutrients to downstream rivers and sustaining diverse organisms. The lab's research examines how water quality in mountain streams is formed, the habitats of streams, and the effects that changes in the watershed environment and climate have on streams. The lab also studies the movement of water and materials in the hyporheic zone, which extends beneath the streambed and where groundwater and river water mix, with the aim of contributing to the restoration of rivers and watersheds.
Junko Kusumi, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Junko Kusumi's lab aims to understand the mechanisms of biological evolution at the level of genes. The lab also works to elucidate how genetic variation, meaning differences between genes, is maintained. In particular, it conducts research on the molecular evolution of symbiotic and parasitic systems, as well as population genetic studies of a variety of organisms. In the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Prof. Kusumi teaches the research-project course "Conservation Genetics."
Yoshihiro Kuwahara, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Yoshihiro Kuwahara's lab analyzes, at the nanoscale and atomic scale, the reactions in which mineral crystals grow and dissolve at the interface where minerals meet water. The lab is also interested in the relationship between these reactions and the Earth's climate change and environmental change, and is pursuing research on it. Mineral growth and dissolution reactions are thought to affect the quality of surface water and groundwater, the weathering of rocks, minerals, and soils, the transport and remediation of pollutants, and even the global climate. This research requires broad perspectives and specialized knowledge, and it has developed through research approaches that span many fields.
Nobuhiko Nakano, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Nobuhiko Nakano specializes in petrology at the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation and studies how the crust of East Antarctica, Southeast Asia, and Japan formed. Geology is the study of how the various rock formations of Japan and the world came to be, approached through fieldwork and laboratory experiments. Using age and isotope analyses as clues, the lab investigates how the crust has evolved over long spans of time. At the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, he teaches courses such as Earth Science Practicum within the project-based research program in the Earth and Environment area.
Ryoko Senda, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Ryoko Senda uses geochemical methods to study the internal structure of the Earth, as well as its chemical composition and evolution. The lab draws on techniques for analyzing trace elements and isotope ratios in various inorganic samples with high precision. Using the same methods, the lab has also begun analyzing archaeological materials in collaboration with archaeologists, extending its research to human history.
Kazunori Matsuo, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Kazunori Matsuo comprehensively studies parasitoid wasps, ranging from taxonomic research to applied use. Parasitoid wasps are wasps that parasitize other insects: the mother wasp lays eggs on a host insect, and the hatched larvae grow by feeding on the host. They are small wasps, with a body length of around 1 mm, but are said to account for about 20% of all insect species, making them an important group for studying biodiversity. Some species are used to control agricultural pests, and they are notable for their many connections with people.
Shinichiro Kida, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Shinichiro Kida studies, from a dynamics perspective, ocean currents between marginal seas such as the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk and the open ocean. The lab investigates seawater exchange through straits, deep gravity currents, and dynamical processes between rivers and the ocean. Its main study areas are the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Indonesian Archipelago, and it also develops river-ocean models. In the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Associate Professor Kida teaches the research project course "Atmospheric and Ocean Science" in the Earth and Environment area.
Satoko Seino, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Satoko Seino, whose specialty is ecological engineering, studies environmental conservation and aquatic organisms in coastal areas and river basins, focusing on coasts, rivers, and brackish water areas. In particular, the lab works on coordinating fishing ground development and conservation, consensus building, and the conservation and restoration of habitats of rare species. It also covers the participation of local residents and citizens in coastal management, as well as water-related environmental planning and legal systems. Recent papers examine topics such as litter on the coasts of western Kyushu and differences between the estuarine tidal flats of neighboring rivers in the Itoshima area near Fukuoka City.
