The Cognitive Science Lab investigates the relationship between people and technology from the perspective of psychology, using experimental methods. In traffic science and traffic psychology, the lab studies automobiles from the viewpoint of drivers and occupants, covering topics such as driving assistance and communication between automated vehicles and people. In virtual reality and human interfaces, the lab investigates how people move around in virtual spaces and how they perceive their own avatars. The lab's website introduces it under the name “Kazunori Shidoji.”

The Machine Learning, Data Mining, and AI Lab conducts research on machine learning, data mining, AI, and related areas. With the goal of building AI that “understands high-level meaning,” the lab investigates human thought patterns and biases through poor explanatory texts about data. The lab also studies recommendation, anomaly detection from images and videos, autonomous mobile robots, and more. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name “Suzuki Lab.”

The Machine Learning Theory Lab is a lab where Professor Eiji Takimoto and Professor Kohei Hatano study online decision-making, computational learning theory, machine learning, and related areas. Based on the principles of the theory of computation, Prof. Takimoto conducts broad research centered on online decision-making, learning theory, and computational complexity theory. Prof. Hatano works on computer science, especially machine learning. The lab belongs to the Intelligence Science Group in the Department of Information Science and Technology.

The Multi-Agent Lab studies multi-agent systems, which are systems that contain multiple intelligent entities (agents). Focusing on settings such as the Internet where humans and software coexist, the lab describes problems such as lab assignment and e-commerce within the frameworks of game theory and microeconomics. Building on this, it uses algorithmic and optimization techniques to design and analyze systems and social institutions. The lab accepts questions about its research and lab visits at any time.

The Natural Language Processing Lab studies natural language processing, which handles the language people use with computers. Its interests include information extraction from large collections of documents, retrieval of academic papers and research data, and large language models. Recent themes include the analysis and improvement of large language models and the retrieval of paper-based historical materials held in archives.

The 3D Multimedia Content Lab studies software that applies 3D graphics, from the perspective of software architecture. The lab wants to build computers with human-friendly interfaces that people without specialized knowledge can use. Recently, the lab has also been working on development support environments for video games and the development of educational content. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Yoshihiro Okada Lab."

The Statistical Learning Lab develops statistical machine learning methods for analyzing real-world data. So far, the lab has mainly worked with biological and chemical data. In addition to developing methods for predicting protein function, it aims to develop methods for predicting compounds in order to narrow down drug candidates. The lab states that its current and future research is not limited to these fields.

The Cultural Intelligence Science Lab mathematically elucidates the intelligence that underlies artistic culture and the mechanisms of cultural development, and studies information technology that helps cultural development. It aims to build models that describe in a unified way everything from the intellectual activities of creators and audiences to the evolution of how knowledge is distributed within social groups. Its work ranges from basic research in machine learning, evolutionary theory, and statistical physics to applied research such as technologies for analyzing and generating music, paintings, and literature. The lab also conducts social experiments using systems such as automatic composition systems.

The Sensory Information Processing Lab conducts research spanning neuroscience and engineering from a theoretical and computational standpoint. One line of research uses algorithms, machine learning, and AI to detect, track, and diagnose problems in hearing and vision. The other pillar is research on theories of the information that neurons handle, and on building and applying spiking neuron models.

The Human Information Science Lab conducts research that measures and analyzes human physiological data, such as electrical signals from the heart and muscles, brain waves, respiration, and body and eye movements. Physiological data can reveal changes in physical and mental states, and abnormalities such as disease, that the person may not notice themselves. The lab works on understanding the structure of the data, elucidating the mechanisms of physiological functions, and developing new evaluation techniques. Another distinctive feature is that the lab aims to apply the knowledge and technologies it obtains to fields such as culture and the arts, society and welfare, medicine and health, sports, and education.
