The Stringology Lab uses the term "strings" for sequential data such as text, time series, and number sequences, and studies from a theoretical perspective algorithms that process them at very high speed with very little memory. The lab says that algorithms for strings have remained one of the most important areas of theoretical computer science from the 1970s to the present. String algorithms are widely used as core technologies in information retrieval and data compression, and string-processing problems also appear frequently in competitive programming. The lab calls itself STRADS, short for String Algorithms and Data Structures group.

The Mathematical Engineering and Information Circuits Lab aims to reveal the mathematical form of various problems in computers and digital communications, and to derive universal solutions based on it. Its research themes are fundamental theories and their applications, including learning theory, machine learning, information theory, information geometry, communication theory, network theory, and nonlinear systems theory. Examples of applications mentioned include cyberattack detection, super-resolution, pattern recognition, CDMA communications, and ultra-high-precision analog-to-digital conversion. On the lab's website, its research is introduced under the names Takeuchi Lab, Jitsumatsu Lab, and Hanaka Lab.

The Algorithm Theory Lab studies the theory of distributed algorithms, particularly distributed coordination of swarms of autonomous mobile robots and fault-tolerant distributed algorithms. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Theoretical Computer Science Group (Yamauchi Lab)." Bachelor's theses from the lab have dealt with problems such as merging, gathering, and sorting of robot swarms.

The Information Security & Multimedia Security Lab focuses on cryptography and information security, and also takes up research themes such as artificial intelligence and blockchain. Professor Koichi Sakurai is interested in the complexity that appears where information meets fields such as computing, mathematics, physics, biology, and economics, and analyzes its structure. The lab's research themes include AI security, as well as quantum cryptography, privacy, and cybersecurity.

The Intelligent Systems Lab develops next-generation artificial intelligence that is robust and adaptive. It tackles weaknesses such as an AI that learned 19x19 Go being unable to play 9x9 Go, and image recognition being fooled by a change of a single pixel. By developing new mechanisms and paradigms of intelligence, the lab aims to improve robustness and adaptability. The lab's website states that students can conduct research using state-of-the-art CPU and GPU servers.

The Quantum Information Lab studies the relationship between “information and physics” by combining quantum information theory with nonequilibrium thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The lab is particularly interested in the fundamental limits of physical processes such as thermodynamics, measurement, and computation, and in how quantum effects affect those limits. It uses mathematical methods to investigate what restrictions and effects symmetry brings to measurement, quantum computation, and heat engines. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name “Tajima Lab.”
