Applied Mathematical Modeling Lab (Collaborative Unit)
Machine-translated · View original
The lab builds mathematical models of information systems useful to society, using real examples from industry.

AboutAbout the lab
Learning how to build models from real industry cases.
The Applied Mathematical Modeling field has been established since fiscal 2003 as a collaborative unit with Hitachi's research laboratories, for applied research and education on mathematical models of various industrial information systems and their optimization and control.
It is run jointly with the Control Systems Theory field. Day-to-day activities take place at Kyoto University, and students visit Hitachi's research laboratories only when necessary. Lab preferences and assignment in the entrance examination are handled separately from the Control Systems Theory field.
Key terms
- Mathematical model
- A description of how a phenomenon or system works, expressed in mathematical equations
- Collaborative unit
- A field in which researchers from companies or research institutes serve as faculty and supervise students jointly with the university
- Smart city
- A city that uses data and information technology to run its services and infrastructure efficiently
ResearchResearch themes
To design information systems that work fully effectively in society and daily life, the lab studies methodologies for building various kinds of models, using real examples from industry.
