Integrated Dynamical Systems Lab
Machine-translated · View original
A lab that controls every kind of system, from automobiles to society.

AboutAbout the lab
Modeling and control of all kinds of systems.
The Integrated Dynamical Systems Lab studies the modeling, analysis, design, and control of a wide variety of dynamical systems, from both theoretical and practical perspectives.
The lab pursues theories that solve universal and fundamental problems, while also tackling real problems of social importance.
Its targets span every area of society, from mechanical systems such as automobiles, robots, and satellites to sewage treatment facilities and electricity use.
The lab belongs to the Systems Science Course of the Graduate School of Informatics, and students from the Department of Engineering Physics in the Faculty of Engineering (Mechanical Systems Engineering Course) are also assigned to it.
Key terms
- Optimal control
- A control method that seeks the best way to operate a system under a given criterion
- Nonlinear system
- A system whose input and output are not proportional, so its behavior becomes complex
- Stochastic system
- A system in which uncertain elements are represented by probability, so that random fluctuations are included

ResearchResearch themes
For the coexistence and harmony of systems that include humans, machines, society, and the environment, the lab aims to elucidate universal principles of modeling, analysis, design, and control. It studies new methodologies for handling nonlinearity, dynamic optimization algorithms, and distributed control theory.
*Illustrative imageModeling and control of mechanical and environmental systems
As machines become more sophisticated, analysis and control that take physical limits into account become necessary. The lab builds mathematical models suited to analysis and control, and applies them to the control of hovercraft, vehicle drifting, vibration of railway vehicles, sewage treatment, and the guidance of electricity demand.
*Illustrative imageComputing optimal motion in an instant
Optimal control of nonlinear systems cannot be solved directly as it stands. The lab developed a fast computational algorithm ahead of the rest of the world and succeeded in computing in milliseconds. The same algorithm has also been put to practical use in autopilot systems for ships.
*Illustrative imageSolving nonlinear systems with algebra
To extend linear control theory to nonlinear systems, the lab studies new methods that use algebra, such as commutative ring theory, and algebraic geometry. By exploiting the structure of equations, it solves problems that could not be solved before, aiming for a theoretical framework that would rewrite the textbooks.
*Illustrative imageAnalysis and control of stochastic systems
Elements that are difficult to model are represented probabilistically, and the system is treated as one that behaves stochastically. The lab studies methods for accurately controlling uncertain systems while taking nonlinearity into account, and also works on drone flight control and on analyzing the properties of machine learning.
