Building Environmental Engineering Lab
Machine-translated · View original
A lab that uses engineering to study building and urban environments and create comfortable spaces.

AboutAbout the lab
Using engineering to create environments where people can live comfortably.
The Building Environmental Engineering Lab conducts research on creating spaces inside and around buildings, and in urban areas, where people can live healthily, safely, and comfortably.
"Environment" here does not refer only to ecology or being kind to the planet.
It covers everything that surrounds people, including the spaces created by buildings, the spaces in which buildings are placed, and culture and climate.
From an engineering perspective, the lab investigates the relationship between people and the objects and spaces around them.
Research is carried out by two teams: one led by Professor Tanaka and one led by Associate Professor Kiyono.
Key terms
- Building environmental engineering
- An academic field that rationally creates spaces where people can live healthily, safely, and comfortably from an engineering perspective
- Passive design
- A design method that makes use of natural elements such as the sun, greenery, water, and wind to achieve comfort in buildings and outdoor spaces
- Microclimate simulation
- A method of studying thermal conditions in a small area, such as around a building or outdoors, by recreating them on a computer
- Remote sensing
- A technology that observes the condition of the earth's surface from a distance, using satellites and other means

ResearchResearch themes
With the aim of rationally creating spaces inside and around buildings, and in urban areas, where people can lead healthy, safe, and comfortable lives, the lab studies the relationship between people and objects and spaces from an engineering perspective. Research is divided between the Tanaka team and the Kiyono team, and is approached from angles such as buildings and the environment, and people and the environment.

Professor Tanaka's team studies the relationship between energy saving in buildings and environmental behavior. It also works on developing housing environment education programs and on environmental planning for architecture and cities.
*Illustrative imageOutdoor Thermal Environment and Passive Design
Associate Professor Kiyono's team investigates outdoor thermal environments and passive design, centered on the building environmental physics of heat, air, and light. It uses microclimate simulation targeting the sun, greenery, water, and wind, as well as remote sensing using satellites and other means.
MembersFaculty
The members of the Building Environmental Engineering Lab consist of faculty, visiting professors, secretaries, and doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students. As of 2025
