The lab solves problems in agriculture and forestry with sensing and robotics technologies.

AboutAbout the lab
Exploring solutions to agricultural and forestry challenges through engineering knowledge
The Takahashi Lab studies machine systems that can carry out work on their own, in support of smart agriculture and forestry.
The lab works on remote sensing and robotics, technologies for restoring the environment and making use of unused resources, and zero-carbon energy.
It is developing a system that tracks the sun to generate electricity, jointly with the Kikura Lab and others, and is also researching how to combine it with technologies for supplying power on site.
In addition to its laboratory, the lab conducts research at the Smart Agriculture Education and Research Field on the Yokohama Campus.
Key terms
- Smart agriculture
- Efforts to solve problems at agricultural production sites using advanced technologies such as robots, AI, and IoT
- Remote sensing
- Technology that measures the shape or condition of an object from a distance using light, sound waves, and the like
- Zero-carbon energy
- Energy that does not emit carbon dioxide when generating power, such as solar, wind, and nuclear power
- Decommissioning
- The work of safely dismantling and decontaminating nuclear facilities that have ended operation

ResearchResearch themes
Based on the realities of Japan's hilly and mountainous areas, the lab aims to solve problems in agriculture and forestry by putting smart technologies into practical use in society and promoting local production and local consumption of renewable energy. By developing the technologies it has established so far into smart technologies, the lab seeks to build "smart agriculture and forestry engineering" as an academic field.
*Illustrative imageRemote Sensing and Robot Control
Research on remote sensing and robot control systems that combine sensing technologies such as ultrasound, lasers, and cameras with robotics. These technologies are developed jointly with the Kikura Lab and the Endo Lab.
*Illustrative imageRemoving Contaminants and Recovering Unused Resources
Research on restoring the environment and making use of resources that currently go unused. The lab works on technologies for removing contaminants from polluted soil and plants, and on technologies for recovering unused resources.
*Illustrative imageSolar-Tracking Power Generation System
As part of its zero-carbon energy research, the lab is developing, among other things, a "solar-tracking power generation system" that follows the movement of the sun to generate electricity. The system is developed jointly with the Kikura Lab and the Tres Bio Institute.
*Illustrative imageThermal Hydraulics and Nuclear Facility Decommissioning
This is research the lab has worked on in the past and continues today. It covers thermal hydraulics research aimed at improving the safety and sophistication of zero-carbon energy use, as well as decommissioning of nuclear facilities, waste treatment and disposal, and decontamination.
