Fundamental Information Mathematics II Lab
Machine-translated · View original
A complex analysis lab that uses the properties of complex numbers to study functions, domains, and surfaces.

AboutAbout the lab
Studying functions and surfaces through the beautiful properties of complex numbers
The Sugawa Lab (Fundamental Information Mathematics II) studies complex analysis.
Using the properties of complex numbers, the lab studies functions and the domains and surfaces that underlie them, and recently it has also been tackling concrete problems with the help of computers.
The mathematics group of the Graduate School of Information Sciences is not directly involved in undergraduate specialized education, so the lab has no undergraduate students and supervises only graduate students (in the master's and doctoral programs).
Students with little specialized mathematical knowledge are welcome as long as they are motivated to learn.
Key terms
- Complex analysis
- A branch of mathematics that studies functions of a complex variable
- Riemann surface
- A surface that looks like the complex plane near every point. It serves as the domain of complex functions
- Teichmüller space
- A space representing all the ways of giving a surface a Riemann surface structure
- Quasiconformal mapping
- A mapping that keeps the distortion of angles within a fixed bound
ResearchResearch themes
Building on complex analysis, the lab covers a wide range of research, from classical complex function theory to Riemann surfaces, Teichmüller spaces, and quasiconformal mappings. Students are supervised separately from Associate Professor Matsubara-Heo, and what is introduced here is the area of expertise of Prof. Sugawa.
*Illustrative imageClassical Complex Function Theory
Undergraduate lectures introduce only the bare minimum, but the lab holds that endless interesting results lie beyond. Studying the fine classical results also brings unexpected discoveries and is enjoyable.
*Illustrative imageRiemann Surfaces
This is a theory that can be called the foundation from which modern algebra, geometry, and analysis developed. Classically, closed Riemann surfaces have been studied in depth, but from the standpoint of analysis, open Riemann surfaces are also interesting objects, and challenges remain in areas such as classification theory.
*Illustrative imageTeichmüller Spaces
This is a theory that investigates how many Riemann surface structures can be put on a fixed surface. Its construction is transcendental and much remains unknown. Prof. Sugawa is interested in the Bers embedding of this space and studies it.
*Illustrative imageQuasiconformal Mappings
This is a class of mappings essential for understanding Teichmüller spaces. Recently, the lab has been extending quasiconformality to study homeomorphic solutions of degenerate Beltrami equations.

Ratings and reviews reflect the experiences of individual current or former students, not the lab's official views. Whether a lab has reviews, or how many, says nothing about the lab itself.
Students who take part in an interview may receive a thank-you gift worth ¥1,000, regardless of what they say.
