The lab uses very-high-energy gamma rays to observe the most energetic astrophysical activity in the universe.
AboutAbout the lab
Probing the origin of cosmic rays with gamma rays
The Yoshikoshi Lab conducts research by observing astronomical objects that emit very-high-energy gamma rays.
Using an observatory known as an imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array, the lab investigates the activity of the astronomical objects with the largest energy scales in the universe.
By observing supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, and other objects, the lab aims to solve the "mystery of the origin of cosmic rays."
Key terms
- Gamma rays
- The most energetic type of light (electromagnetic waves)
- Atmospheric Cherenkov telescope
- A ground-based telescope that observes gamma rays by detecting the faint bluish-white light produced when a gamma ray enters the atmosphere
- Supernova remnant
- An astronomical object left after a massive star ends its life in a huge explosion, in which the scattered gas expands and glows
ResearchResearch themes
The lab conducts observational research on very-high-energy gamma-ray sources at an observatory known as an imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array. It is also advancing research and development for next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory projects.

Ratings and reviews reflect the experiences of individual current or former students, not the lab's official views. Whether a lab has reviews, or how many, says nothing about the lab itself.
Students who take part in an interview may receive a thank-you gift worth ¥1,000, regardless of what they say.
