The lab grows delicious vegetables by making use of natural ecosystems.
AboutAbout the lab
Food production that enriches the environment
The International Plant Resource Science Lab (Miyazawa Lab) studies agricultural systems that work in harmony with natural ecosystems.
Human activities, including agriculture, place a heavy burden on the functions that maintain the cycles and sustainability of ecosystems.
The lab aims to create technologies and systems in which people producing food and living well can itself enrich the global environment and ecosystems.
The lab approaches its work from both natural science and social science, from the connections among living things in the soil to the mechanisms by which delicious vegetables spread.
Key terms
- soil ecosystem
- The network of relationships among living things formed by microorganisms, small organisms, and plant roots in the soil
- carbon cycle
- The flow of carbon moving between plants, soil, and the atmosphere. Plants take it in, it accumulates in the soil, and it returns to the atmosphere
- filamentous fungi
- Microorganisms in the group that includes molds and mushrooms. They spread by extending thin, thread-like hyphae through the soil
ResearchResearch themes
The lab aims to create technologies and systems in which people producing food and living well can itself enrich the global environment and ecosystems. Its research ranges from growing vegetables by making use of natural ecosystems to building mechanisms that spread delicious vegetables.
*Illustrative imageVegetable Cultivation That Makes Use of Natural Ecosystems
The lab is testing cultivation methods that draw out the functions of the soil ecosystem and use local organic resources as energy and materials. It also works to enrich the ecosystems of cultivated land and reduce pest damage through food chains.
*Illustrative imageHow to Spread Delicious Vegetables
The taste of vegetables varies greatly depending on freshness, season, variety, and the soil environment. To build a society where everyone can eat delicious vegetables, the lab conducts research from both natural science and social science perspectives.
*Illustrative imageFarming Methods That Make Use of Carbon
The lab studies farming methods that raise yield and quality while preserving natural cycles, by enhancing the carbon cycle in the soil. By activating indigenous filamentous fungi, it aims to bring about this flow in fields within a short period of time.
MembersFaculty
