Next-Generation Refrigerant Properties Lab
Machine-translated · View original
A research center that investigates the thermophysical properties of next-generation refrigerants in collaboration with universities and research institutions.

AboutAbout the lab
Investigating next-generation refrigerants together with research institutions in Japan and abroad.
The Research Center for Next-Generation Refrigerant Properties (NEXT-RP) is a hub for research collaboration in Japan and abroad, aimed at the development and evaluation of next-generation refrigerants.
Refrigerants are substances used in refrigerators and air conditioners. Fluorocarbon refrigerants have been a problem because of ozone layer depletion, and their replacement, HFCs, because of their large impact on global warming.
The center conducts fundamental research on the thermophysical properties, heat exchange characteristics, and basic cycle performance of new refrigerants with zero ODP and low GWP, which place a small burden on the environment.
It carries out this research not only with labs at Kyushu University but also in collaboration with universities and research institutions in Japan and abroad.
Key terms
- Refrigerant
- A substance used in refrigerators and air conditioners. Examples include fluorocarbon refrigerants and their replacement, HFCs
- ODP
- Ozone depletion potential. An index of how strongly a refrigerant affects the ozone layer
- GWP
- Global warming potential. An index of how strongly a refrigerant affects global warming
- Thermophysical properties
- Properties of a substance related to heat. For refrigerants, thermodynamic properties, viscosity, thermal conductivity, and so on are measured

ResearchResearch themes
The center aims to establish the foundational technologies needed for the practical use of next-generation refrigerants. Not only labs at Kyushu University but also universities and research institutions in Japan and abroad each take charge of measurement and evaluation, examining thermophysical properties, heat transfer, and system performance from multiple angles.
*Illustrative imagePrecise Measurement of Thermodynamic Properties of Refrigerants
At Kyushu University's Ito Campus, the center precisely measures the thermodynamic properties of pure and mixed refrigerants. Equipment is in operation for measuring PVT properties by the isochoric method and the Burnett method, and for measuring vapor–liquid equilibrium properties by the circulation method.
*Illustrative imageTransport Properties of Refrigerants and Heat Transfer in Heat Exchangers
At Saga University, researchers measure the transport properties of refrigerants, such as viscosity and thermal conductivity. They also measure boiling and condensation heat transfer in plate heat exchangers and observe gas–liquid two-phase flow.
*Illustrative imageDeveloping Equations of State for Refrigerants
At Kyushu Sangyo University, researchers develop high-accuracy equations of state for pure refrigerants and mixing models for refrigerant mixtures. They also verify whether the measured thermophysical and transport properties are valid.
*Illustrative imageSurface Tension, Heat Transfer, and Property Prediction
At Nagasaki University, researchers measure the surface tension and freezing points of new low-GWP refrigerants and evaluate heat transfer and pressure drop in spirally grooved tubes. Properties in low-temperature ranges that are difficult to measure are predicted by molecular simulation.

Ratings and reviews reflect the experiences of individual current or former students, not the lab's official views. Whether a lab has reviews, or how many, says nothing about the lab itself.
Students who take part in an interview may receive a thank-you gift worth ¥1,000, regardless of what they say.
